Topshop & Dorothy Perkins: Young peoples stores

by stedeb

Both these English chain stores have also opened in Discovery Plaza only on a small scale. We checked out both stores and to be honest we found them over priced and selling nothing we hadnt seen at home here in Aus or lots of other stores in Bali. However that does not mean the tennagers in the family will not find something to their liking.

Marks & Spencer in Bali!!

by stedeb

There is a small M&S store opened in Discovery Plaza selling a samll range of ladies & mens wear including beach wear, underwear & bath toiletries. Can't say there were any good bargans to be had but if you are looking for something a bit different than you can find at home maybe this is the place there were always plenty of people making purchases when we went in. It certsainly isnt bargain shopping but I managed to pick up 2 tops simply because they were a bit different to what I can get at home I paid approx $AU55. They also had a sale on any 3 products for the price of 2 I purchased 3x500ml bottles of creme bath $AU20

SOGO: Underneath Discovery Plaza

by stedeb

This new store has opened underneath Discovery Plaza where the supermakret used to be. This shop sells lots of good quality stuff great shoes for men and women, clothing, bags, luggage, underwear but no children's wear or cosmetics. We found the prices to be just as competative as Centro upstairs but the layout is much more upmarket. The clothing on sale is much more superior to stuff sold in Matahari other than the genuine luggage or handbags which are the same. The shoes on sale here rivaled Bangkok and I bought 3 pairs they have god size ranges and plenty to choose from. The prices were good I paid approx $AU20 a pair.

Ubud Market: A labyrinth of scents and color

by gypsysoul73

Also along Jl Raya and no more than a 2 minute walk from the Bungalows is the Ubud Market. This was easily one of the places I was most excited to visit. In fact, we went to the market three times, once every day that we were there. Marilyn, the sweet lady manager of our bungalows, taught us an invaluable lesson in one of her many emails to me before my trip: always start your haggling with 30% of their asking price, you will usually end up agreeing at 50%. They are always willing to sell even at the smallest of profits, if they don't agree to what you're willing to pay that means it really is too low. Armed with this strategy and some techniques I've learned through the years in dealing with persistent-to-the-point-of-being-downright-rude vendors under my belt, I proceeded with confidence. Looking back now I realize I should have expected it but during that first visit, I was taken by...

Himya Gallery: Beautiful Housewares & Textiles

by SFHulaGIrl

There are several shops in the Legian area selling housewares & textiles of various types of wood, horn, abalone & mother of pearl. The employees here gave me slightly better prices than others. After my initial visit, they told me that if I returned (which I did!), they would give me even better prices. Serving trays & platters, bowls, soap dishes, salt & pepper shakers, turtle & fish figurines, etc., etc. As always, prices are negotiable. I would say an average price for salt & pepper shakers of abalone is Rp. 70,000 or less, depending on style.

Krisna Yuna Art Shop: Krisna Yuna Art Shop

by SFHulaGIrl

Another of the many jewelry shops in the Celuk area. Employees were patient as I went back & forth several times comparing prices & deciding which items I couldn't live without. One of the best values to buy here is the ornate, carved silver lighters. The price was something like US$8.00. Jewelry, mainly silver, but also gold. Prices are negotiable. One is often able to get 20% to 40% off of the prices marked/quoted after a bit of haggling.

Dewi Spa & Salon: Dewi Spa & Salon

by SFHulaGIrl

The spa seemed rather small, but the employees were extremely nice. I only had time for a cucumber tonic facial (Rp. 59,500). The facial consisted of cleansing, toning & exfoliating. The facial was good; gentle & very relaxing.Dewi is open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily.During my facial, the pet kitten of one of the employees was meowing loudly for attention. When my facial was finished, the kitten sat in my lap purring contentedly. I was having so much fun playing with the kitten that the owner told me I could the kitten with me while I had dinner, then bring it back! Other services offered are: traditional or seaweed manicures/pedicures (Rp. 43,500 to Rp. 49,500), waxing (Rp. 43,500 to Rp. 117,500), massages (Rp. 69,500 to Rp. 79,500), body scrub (Rp. 97,000), papaya body polish (Rp. 87,500) and hair treatments (Rp. 37,500 to Rp. 87,500).
