Hiking up volcano (Mt. Batur)

by RoseAmano

In the central of the island there is a small city with some volcanoes and a lake, which can be hiked relatively easy beginning from dawn and ending mid-afternoon. Local guides will show you the way - they would try to attract prospective clients by showing a guestbook written by previously guided tourists, who jotted their experience about the hike and about the skill of the guide. There is lodging at the town to stay in beforehand, where you'd meet your guide at dawn. The nice cool breeze at the top is a nice respite from the heat at sea level. Sturdy walking shoes, and layered clothing to keep warm at the top.

Rafting the Telaga Waja river

by austarman

This is a great full days activity that you can arrange from anywhere in Bali. You get picked up and transported to the rafting plus given a full buffet lunch all for about $40 Australian. They have been doing the rafting on this river and the Agung river for some years now so the river guides are professional and the rafting is quite safe. There are some fast flowing rapids plus one 4 meter drop over a dam wall. You do get wet so take a change of cloths.See my things to do tips for more info. Just casual cloths such as a tee shirt and shorts as well as thongs or sandals. All other equipment will be provided.

Fire at Mont Agung

by balisunshine

A few will a have the courage to take the hike up of Bali’s holiest mountain. In 1963, Hindu priests were preparingfor a very important ceremony, the Eka Dasa Rudra, that only occurs every 100 years. The volcano has already showed some activity during February of that year. This caused some dispute amongst the priest regarding the timing of the event. But because president Soekarnoand some inter national travel agentswere to attend, the event went on,beginning on March 8th.The President never showed up,but the travel agents did or brief while. On the 17th of March, the volcano went into a massive explosion, destroying whole villagesand creating rivers of lava, showering the island with ash and giant volcanic boulders, and unleashing powerful earthquakes. The volcano is now dormant,so limb on if you have the audacity! For tips about the hike, read the nest tip.

SURFING BALINESE

by RoyJava

Kuta Legian Beach is famous for its super waves, with a coral reef (from the Southern end of Bali) and beach breaks. It is the best place to learn surfing. For the more experienced surfers, there are great surf breaks around Ulu Watu, and Tanjung Bukit.Surfing Bali Most fellows bring their own surfboard what offers a phantastic seaview with hybrids, funboards, pointed longbaords, shortboard rockers and others. But you can rent surfboards at the Kuta Legian Beach, includes for beginners. There are all sorts of surfboards and boogie boards, and also from losmen near the beach it's possible to rent surfboards for one day (about 10.000 to 40.000 Rp, get some current info around).

Bike Ride Down From Danau Bratan Area

by TravelSimone

Highly recommend riding bikes down from the lakes/volcano with Sobek. This was not a cheap day, but it was well worth the expense. You get to really go off the beaten path and see the "real Bali". They take you to breakfast overlooking Lake Bratan, and nearby you start your ride. The trip ends in Ubud for a tasty late lunch. Shorts and shoes to ride a bike. I just wore Teva's and was happy I didn't have on tennis shoes. They provide you with water, quasi-mountain bikes, biking gloves (cheap ones to take with you when you leave) and helmuts. Also, Sobek gives discounts to guests who have Singapore Airlines flight ticket stubs.

White Water Rafting

by TravelSimone

Rafting is a nice way to view another aspect of Bali. The trips are not cheap (~$65), but it is a great way to spend a day. The rapids are not seriously hard core- maybe class 2 and 3, but there are enough of them that the trip is not boring. We went with Sobek. I think that Sobek gives a decent discount for those who have Singapore Airline flight ticket stubs. The raft trip ends with the option of a shower and a lunch buffet. You don't need much other than a bathing suit and a decent pair of sport sandals. Don't wear thongs or nice shoes that can easily slip off. They will even provide you with a towel at the end. They also have a large dry bag to put in your things so that they don't get wet. A cameral is a great idea and they stop about midway during the trip so that you can take photos. A disposable water camera also might be a good idea.

About the Waves

by balisunshine

Bali’s worse wind for surfing is southerlyThe best tides come in during the full and new lunar phasesA lot of people give surfing a go at Kuta or Legian, but it can have some pretty heavy currents and each year we hear of at least one drowning. The water in Kuta and Legianis not very clean.Uluwatu's, Bingin and Dreamlands are definitely not for the beginner and don't venture out without booties on. Surfer Magazine has called Padang Padang“one of the top 10 best surf spots in the world”Airport break is a little softer.Nusa Lembongan is not good for beginners but is a beautiful place with really clear, clean water. Great for snorkeling for the non surfers.Legian or Seminyak(most locals surf here)Most of the surfing in Bali is ok for the Intermediate Except maybe UllawatuThe wet season the prevailing winds are offshore on the Sanur/Nusa Dua side and during the dry season they are on the...

Staying near the Beach has its advantages

by ZENDER

Every morning it was interesting to wake up to a bright new hot day, with waves rising to heights suitable for surf...the surf here along the beaches is suitable for various grades of surfers. Kuta Beach is just only one of the many beaches lining the west side of the island with nice surf waves for the avid surfers. Your own surfboard and the accompanying apparel is a must for the serious surfer obviously. Otherwise you can rent a surf board from some of the stalls.
