Lake Bratan for water sport activities

by fachd

There are plenty of water sport activities at Lake Bratan (danau Bratan), you can do Para sailing, water-skiing, banana-boat rides, canoeing or rent a motorboat. Across the lake you can visit WWII Japanese caves or visit the temple of Pura Ulun Danu. The lake is 1200 meters above sea level which makes the temperature nice and cool. About two hours drive from Kuta.

Pura Ulun Danu Temple

by fachd

We visited Pura Ulun Danu Temple and glad we did. The sight is definitely for photographer and video enthusiast. The first thing I noticed was the calm of Lake Bratan surrounded with misty mountain on the background. The main attraction of the temple ‘Ulun Danu’ prominently stood alone as if telling you this is the beginning and the head of the lake. ‘Ulun Danu’ symbolizes nature that surrounds her and dedicates to the goddess of lakes and rivers ‘Ida Batara Dewi Ulun Danu’. Pura Ulun Danu Temple is a 50km drive north of Denpasar. The temple was built in the 17th century. It consists of complexes with courtyards and many shrines. Meru being the dominant shrine has eleven tiers. The temple can give the illusion of actually floating on the water. It is the second most important temple in Bali, and it’s very favorite direction for tourist. Most hotel in Bali can arrange the trip or hiring a...

Taman Ayun (Ahyun) Temple

by fachd

Taman Ayun (Ahyun) Temple is a Royal Family Temple of Mengwi Dynasty and was built in 1634. It is located in Mengwi Village and about 18 Km northwest of Denpasar. As the Royal Family temple of the Raja of Mengwi, this temple is a place to worship the Royal ancestors. Inside there are multistoried pagoda shrines which some of them with eleven roofs called meru meru, godly statues and Balinese pergola. The temple is encircled with large ponds which give effect from afar that the temple is floating on water. The beautiful manicured garden and water fountain with the cool air breeze provides feelings of serenity. It has three connecting temple yards. The Utama Mandala the highest circle, the Madia Mandala the circle in between and the humblest circle is the Nista Mandala. I thought the visit to Taman Ayun was well worth it, take your time and enjoyed the ambience and beauty, we did.

Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal Temple

by fachd

Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal (the temple of the dead) is the name of the temple we visited in Ubud. The temple is located inside the Sacred Monkey Forest. There’s no exact information when the temple was built. According to historical record the temple could be built by Pajeng Dynasty who ruled around Ubud in the 14th century. The Dynasty was conquered by the Majaphit Empire in 1343 and it is possible the temple could be built by them. The temple has serenity feel about it. It is well look after. There are monkeys (Macaque) freely roaming inside the courtyard of the temple, some perched on top of the roof, sitting on a tree branch and some of the juvenile were playing games. For respect of the culture make sure you wear a sarongs and a sash, you can hire them for small amount, the money you give is a donation for the temple.

Cycling Tour

by fachd

We went the half day cycling tour to see the real Bali first hand; I thought it was a great way. Wayan the guide pick us up from our resort hotel at Legian and drive us to Ubud to pick another lot of cyclist. It took about an hour drive. It was five of us including Wayan. The half day tour is not that difficult, 80% cycling on flat road the other 20% is uphill and duration of about three hours. You’ll discover the countryside of Ubud, cycle through the rice field and witness the rice farmers doing his manual work. We saw rice farmers with a flag attached to a bamboo sticks leading flock of ducks. We cycle through the village and stopped to have a glimpse at the craftsmen composing his artistic work. The children were curious and followed us for a little distance, they were so happy tried to make conversation in broken English. One shout ‘what is your name mister’ as we moved forward....

Tanah Lot - Pilgrimage Home Temple

by fachd

Tanah Lot meaning ‘land sea’ is one of the sea temples on the south coast and is famous for the sunset. The temple on the rock can only be reached in low tide but tourist is not permitted to go inside the temple. The sunset is the reasons for tourist come to Tanah Lot.Before you reached the temple there’s a small market which you can buy various souvenirs and crafts. Along the way there are many small cafes where you can have refreshment even to eat. Tanah Lot temple is located in Tabanan. It’s worth visiting and only takes about 25 minutes by car from Legian. There are entry fees.

Sacred Monkey Forest Ubud

by fachd

Despite there was rabbi scared in Bali we still visited the Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud. As soon as we got off the Toyota van you’ll see monkeys (long tail Macaques) everywhere, this was on the main road. The monkeys roam freely in the street. The front entrance is a few meters away from the van. There was a cost I think around 20,000 IDR.If you want you can buy banana to feed the monkeys. As you approached inside there were monkeys everywhere. Make sure you hide the banana if you don’t to give the banana straight away, but the monkeys are not stupid. When you ready to feed them, stand still and put the banana with your hand above your shoulder. They climb your body and grab the banana and sometimes sit on your shoulder and eat the banana. The monkeys here are well fed, but still you have to be careful. Do not tease or try to touch the monkeys, they can be very protective of their...

Sacred Mount Batur

by fachd

It takes two hour drive from Legian to Kintamani to see the spectacular view of Mount Batur. We didn’t climb the mountain; we just saw the view from a restaurant. I think the name of the restaurant is Batur Sari, I know we paid 80,000 IDR each for Indonesian buffet lunch. Even though it was raining and misty, it was still a memorable, to see a panoramic view of an active volcano plus Lake Batur while we had lunch. I think next time in Bali we will stay in Kintamani to see more of the surrounding and maybe climb Mt Batur. Mount Batur (1772 meter) is a must-see in Bali. It is the most sacred mountain in Bali after Mt Agung. The first historically documented eruption of Batur was in 1804 and the last eruption was in 1999.

Botanical garden (kebun Raya Eka Karya Bali)

by fachd

We visited Botanical garden (kebun Raya Eka Karya Bali) located at Candikuning Bedugul on the slopes of Tree Mountain (Gunung Pohon). It was built in 1959. It is a huge tropical garden extending over 120 hectares of land, with much variety of plants, floral and collection of orchids from islands of Indonesia and some part of the world like Australia and New Zealand. The botanical garden is great place for picnic, is a place to relax in peaceful surroundings and watched the many variety of birdlife. If you have time you can go for a walk and explore the garden. According to our driver at the top of the garden you can see the view of the Lake Bratan. It takes about two hours drive from Kuta and I think it’s worth a visit. The climate is much cooler and unpredictable than Kuta, so bring umbrellas and warm clothe. There are entry fees but I am not quite sure how much. I think is about 7000...
