Sleazy traders by the beach in Kuta/Seminyak/Legia

by dfactor

I was fleeced of 40,000 rupiah on the beach. Thanks to a lady who wanted to give me a free menicure! Then she asked for 100,000 rupiah for the menicure. (For your information, 100,000 is quite a lotta money in Bali, though not too much in KL. You can get a lotta stuff with 100,000 rupiah. Was told the average Balinese only make about 600,000 rupiah a month.) Finally, we settled at 60,000 rupiah, but my friend told me he usually paid 20,000, plus pedicure as well! I was fumming mad! Days later, found out you can actually get a lotta lotta stuff with 60,000! A cup of coffee in Four Seasons Ubud only cost you 35,000 rupiah, a decent room by the sea in Lovina cost me 60,000 a nite......Another lady wanted to sell me some wooden braclets for 50,000 each, which I later found out, at the stores by the streets, at only 10,000 each. This is outrageous! Always be careful at the beach. They are...

Booking excursions

by redhotwax

If you plan to go somewhere, don't book excursions in your hotel, but shop around. Especially in Kuta there's loads of vendors who offer big discounts on everything you would want to do in Bali. This goes for rafting, trips to temples etc etc. My tip is to find yourself a friendly driver for your trip and get him to drive you there, unless the excursion agencies offer the same trip inclusive of transport and discounts. There's a really good stall in front of the McDonalds near the beach. They offer loads of trips with big discounts.

Turtle Island

by redhotwax

Just don't. Don't visit this awful place! Snakes have their mouths tied down, eagles in small cages and bats who can't fly because their wings are cut. Sounds nice huh? Just skip this awful place. The only positive thing I can say is that the turtles are relatively well off with their big pond. I regret visiting this place! Don't buy anything! Go to the Monkey Forest in Ubud.

just business strategy

by pehsan

here, the smart move "ask the price before you purchase" won't work. they will persuade you to take FIRST and count LATER. all in all, they are merely making their living and some really make their ends meet. so, no big deal. if you willing to pay the price, what the heck.. you know they will charged you higher price. if your package come with breakfast then don't border to order anything extra. if your package exclusive of breakfast, then prepare yourself a bottle of water and some food (energy bars etc). in case you aren't well prepared, then pay the price.

Taxis at any price

by Winged

Everywhere you go in Bali, people will be offering you transport. Most of the time, except in metered taxis, the fare is negotiable. Agree on a price before getting in. The thing is, unless you're in a remote area, or an area run by a taxi 'gang', you're going to have lots of rides to choose from, so you can afford to shop around and find someone who will take you for the price you're prepared to pay. (You can recognise if you're in a taxi gang's turf because other taxis will be reluctant to pick you up and may tell you they can't take you from where you are standing. The only people to offer you transport will be charging ridiculous prices.)Metered taxis have a couple of potential tourist traps of their own. Some have their meters set to tick over at a faster rate than others. And if you're unlucky, a driver might decide to take you to your destination via the longest route possible......

Beware those friendly Kuta Street vendors

by slack_champ

These shop assistants especially near the Benesari Lane vicinity would prey on first time and unguided travellers and would continue to harass them for services such as hair beading, removal tattoos, nail polishing and etc. My advice give a firm No! and leave however they may try the sympathy vote especially towards male travellers but again the end results gonna burn a hole in your pocket. Its sad cos most of them are not ethnic Balinese people but they are tarnishing the island's image. It would help if you could mention your Bali contact's name (if any) so to remind them that you are not a newbie to the island Actually for real shopping you should head to the market at Sukawati or Tanah Lot cos the real Balinese people are trading there.

Latest time share scam

by OrmondeW

We had a lovely time in Bali and the only annoying event was a call to our hotel room from a woman called "Joyce" with a rather plummy English accent (which occasionally faltered) telling us that because of the downturn in tourism blah blah blah the Peninsula Hotel group were selecting visitors to Bali at random to receive a week's free accommodation at any Peninsula Hotel in the region - and two weeks if they chose to stay in the Peninsula Hotel in Nusa Dua. Sounds pretty good when you're having a really good time there. ALL you had to do was be picked up by their courtesy taxi and have a free breakfast/lunch and have a look at the wonderful place you could spend two weeks in. Now seeing as we hadn't entered any contest and had no idea how they got our name and room number we were a little suspicious. We had three small children with us and didn't need to have our time wasted. The staff...

Going1,going 2,...SOLD

If you shopping around ,start bargain when your eyes catch that really interest you.The Local will normally double up the price even triple!!.Its sound cheap but actually, save your money alot. Just bargain accordingly to your budget but with a smile at least. Remember....polite is the best policy! You can survey the price around at several shop 1st before you make any decision.

Monkey Forest

by GK2005

Monkey Forest is just a sanctuary for the monkeys and so its not exactly a tourist attraction. The entrance fee for this attraction is so high that its definitely not value for money. This place is an area where monkeys generally roam free as its a sanctuary for them, however, there is not really anything to do except watch them for a few minutes. Since monkeys also roam free, its also a bit dangerous as some of them get aggressive. If you are a group of 3 and above, its best to buy just one ticket, send someone inside first to see what is there to see and then take a decision on whether everyone wants to go. This way, you dont pay for everyone in advance and end up being disappointed. Unless you are a researcher or someone of that kind, I dont think you would find it too amusing to spend more than 10 minutes inside this place. Though its a haven for monkeys which is a noble cause, its...

"Do you need transport, Mike?" - it's NOT the best

by josepontes

In Bali you will find many, many means of transport like Taxis, bikes, motor bikes, car rental, etc...I have only one advice, in Taxis, choose the one's that says "Blue Bird Company" this are the best and most onest ones, the others ones are mainly scams. In Blue Bird Company you will have a normal metter running, in the others you will have only the price that the drivers ask you, most of the time if you bargen you would make a good deal, but if you don't.... you will get sucked out. Imagine if you can't have a Blue Bird Company taxi anyhere, a litle dificult but possible, you will have to bargen the price, if you went to that place on Blue Bird, just ask a little more, like:From - To: Jimbaram/Kuta Square30000 rupis with Blue BirdWith any other, just ask like 40000 rupis it's a good deal concerning you don't have any other way! Just stay calm and bargen your price with the driver,...
