BESAKIH TEMPLE

by aussiejen

Although this is the mother temple in Bali, there are not many tourists here. The major tour groups have taken this off their agenda. It is very impressive looking but we were nearly put off by the price we were told a guide would cost. Luckily our driver had warned us this might happen. The first price they told us was rp300,000, but after threatening to leave, the price suddenly came down to rp30,000. The entrance fee was a fixed price. But do make sure you hold on to your tickets, they try to trick you into handing them over while you are organising the guide. Take your own sarong. They can be hired, but it's a rip off. Better value to buy one if you've forgotten to bring one.Lots of little shops selling all sorts of souvenirs. They are desperate for your business due to lack of tourists.

Keep a close eye when changing money

by BenjaminHaddock

We were warned by a car rental company to keep a close eye when changing money at the local money changers. We stayed in the Tanjung Benoa area and there were several small money changers on the main road. One day we tested our rental car company's theory and were astonished. We went into four money changers and each one tried to scam us!When changing 100 Australian dollars we had the following tricks pulled:1. The money is counted out in front of you and then 're-counted' by the money changer. While he is recounting he secretly drops some of the notes back behind the counter2. The full exchange amount was never counted out fully. For example 100 Aus was about 730 000 Indonesian but only 700 000 was counted out and then the guy asks you if you have change for 50 000. While you look in your wallet for change he drops some of the money back behind his counter.3. Once you have seen the game...

don't follow local guides to watersports @nusa dua

by kenteh

a local approached us and told us he could arrange watersports at nusa dua for us at a low price. for a price of 30000RP we could try parasailing, jet skiing and snorkelling.in the end we ended up at the commericalised part of nusa dua when many tourist like us were queuing for parasailing. there were many boats doing that and some parasailer got entangled mid air. wasnt a pleasant experience, air time was only 3 minutes and the instructors kept shouting for the next tourist to take over the parasailor that just left the harness.water for snorkelling was murky. visilibity less than 5m, and you could do diving without a open water cert, which is dangerous.jet skiing was done with a instructor behind you. don't try parasailing. air time too little and not much to see. nusa dua is a nice place for beaches. if you have to do watersports, book your places from more reputable sources like...

Day Trips to Nusa Lembongan- Not What You'd Expect

by TravelSimone

I don't know that I would call this a tourist trap per se. Some people might enjoy the day cruises over to Nusa Lembongan.Three companies offer day trips: Bali Hai, Bounty Cruises and Island Explorer Cruises. They take you to their off shore water sports pontoons. These are really, really ugly and create a horrible eyesore for those staying on Nusa Lembongan. You can go to the beach on Nusa Lembongan, but note that during high tide, the beach can be very dirty and almost too small to lay out on. I don't think a trip out here would be truly unbearable. The operators will take you to the shore where you can spend time walking through the village and soak up some of the local color. Make sure you bring plenty of suncreen and you also might want to consider seasick medication if you are prone to this, as the sea can be really choppy on the ride over and back. Possibly contact a dive company...

Bemo Boss???

by RoyJava

We didnot want to be independed from the Free scheduled Shuttle Hotel-bus service to Kuta Beach and Kuta Art Market. We took a cab, waiting around the corner ... not yet knowing the price (included bargaining it is about 10.000 Rp, or one Euro!). Bad idea, second time we had to pay 50.000 Rp. Ask around what price you have to pay, or get some info at hotel-desk. Some trips are "fixed prices", though keep on bargaining ... It's really annoying taxi-drivers stubbornly jump onto you all the time. Walk in opposite direction, so the taxi-drivers can't go with you in same direction, shouting "Bemo Boss?".Or answer "No Boss, not today ...!", they will be stunned by the equality of address. The best is to take a metered taxi, which cost the same or even less than a chartered (unmetered) bemo/car, and will certainly be air-conditioned!

Hotel Pickups

by Travelshoe

At the Airport, if there is no one from you hotel waiting to pick you up, just get a cab to your hotel. Do not give your name or where you are staying to the other tourist"pickup" guys. The guys will then call you hotel room, and suggest that you take thier daily tours. Its best to ask your hotel Belboy as he would know cheap alternatives.

Pura besakih - major rip off

by Haikarl

Pura Besakih is really a major tourist attraction in Bali but beware, it is also a major place to get rip off by the locals. Before entering the temple you will be asked by the so call 'guardian' of the temple to rent the sarong at a price of between Rp10,000 to Rp20,000. Then you'll be asked to hire a local guide at a cost of between Rp150,000 to Rp200,000. (Actually the price varies depending on the color of your skin and hair!!)After you've done with the temple there goes the parking attendent who will rip you off another between Rp10,000 - Rp20,000. Nowadays tourist are avoiding from visiting Pura Besakih. Much better to visit Uluwartu or temple in the jungle.

High ground, high price? Wild river, wild price?

by 31Aug

Guided tours that we went for, White Water Rafting and Mount Climbing. while "most stuff" are provided in the tour fare, in between each adventure, when we stop for rests, the guides/porters brought softdrinks/beers that they would offer us. What they don't "remind" us of is we have to buy them, pricey. It's ok though if you feel that they deserve it, it's like giving them a bonus for their job well done.

Buy Expensive Goods

by samantha_chee

Cause : Your MercifulnessI bought two very expensive hand made photo album at Monkey Garden - Alas Kedaton.A lady will escort you for the tour right after you purchase entrance ticket. That is a F.O.C. service provided. She'll "introduce" this place and the monkeys to you. And at the end of your tour, she'll bring you to her stall (she's actually stall owner/helper).She told us that she got no sales for days, ... Out of mercifulness, i bought two hand made photo album at 50000 Rp. That's the best price after i bargained for 10 minutes. The price is quite reasonable for me at that time.I found out the selling price for the album at Sukawati the next day, the it only cost maximum 15000 Rp each. Though 20000 Rp is not too much for foreigner like us, but i hope to highlight it here. Beware if you paid X times extra of the normal selling price. BARGAIN! Ask them to stay away from you, do...

Turtle Island

by chatterley

Turtle Island - not worth the time and money! It's a HUGE tourist trap, nothing much to see (except some poor animals being trapped in cages). We were cajoled into buying a necklace ( the lady asked for 60,000 rp, but we bargained down the price to 30,000 rp). To our horror, we saw the EXACT same necklaces being sold at the Matahari Dept Store for only 5,000 rp a piece! Before leaving the Island, we were also asked to give a donation to help in their work of "animal welfare". Ridiculous! If you really have to visit Turtle Island, try not to buy anything from the souvenir stall! Overpriced items galore!
