Suteja Neka is the founder of this museum. He collected various artwork, thus the Neka Art Museum was born in 1976. It is in a beautiful garden setting overlooking the river valley. There are 7 separate buildings showcasing the artwork of Balinese, other Indonesian & foreign-born artists. Some of the artwork of Walter Spies can be found here.

The museum is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. No flash photography, tripods or smoking is allowed inside the buildings. Admission is Rp. 20,000.

The Neka Museum on the northern edge of the town of Ubud can be visited on foot, but it's a rather long walk uphill. Unless you really like walking a lot, I would not suggest that you undertake this trip on foot. We walked to the museum all the same, but we took a minivan on our way back.

Neka Art Museum is yet another art museum with lots of contemporary art pieces. As we reached there half an hour before closing time, we did not enter the museum. We took a look at the surroundings of the museum and started our walk back to Ubud town, about 40minutes walk. It was a good walk along Jalan Raya Campuhan as there were lots of interesting little galleries and stalls selling local crafts.

The title of this work of art is "The dagger attack on Rangda" and the artist is I Gusti Nyoman Lempad (I took this information from the museum website).

Walking through the Neka Museum is also a kind of discovery tour, because there are several pavillions that can be explored. This is the carved door of one of these pavillions.
