MAS (Malaysia Airlines) have frequent flight to Bali (Ngurah Rai International Airport, Denpasar) with a quite reasonable fares. Check out MAS website from time to time for promotions which they do it quite often.

Rent a Moped!

The mopeds are cheap. Crazy Cheap. Its an easy and convienent way to get around the village and surrounding countryside. Bargain with the rental guy. His first price will be about $5 USD... laugh and offer him half that, he'll take it.

You can rent mopeds at the center section of the village, across from the palace.

centre and around ubud area is something compact and very nice to be explored by bicycle. just rent abour idr 15,000/day and you can go anywhere you love to do!!!
and the rentals are very easy to be found anywhere. whenever you see many bicyles parked, just politely asked if you can rent one of them. and do not forget to check and re-check it before you decided to rent.

Walking to Ubud

Ubud is a walking town. You can walk almost anywhere that you chose to go. There are always people wanting to give you a ride though. You will hear Transport yelled every few seconds. If you decide to get a car and driver then agree on a price before getting in his car.
That may take a lot of haggeling.

Key word here is bargain!

If you don't have your own transportation, you may need to rent a bike (US$4 a day) or use the service of locals who own cars.

As you shop along Jl Monkey Forest, you will always be asked if you need transport, to the point that sometimes I feel harassed.

If you are interested, tell them where you want to go and ask for a price. Always bargain downwards by 50% as a starting point or less before agreeing on a final price.

These are not public cabs and thus, I would recommend it only for short distances along the main roads.

Sila's a Terrific Driver in Ubud

Sila with our sons at Ubud's rice terraces

I just got back today from our family's first trip to Bali/Ubud, and I had to write about our wonderful experience w/ our driver, Sila. We are so lucky we hired Sila because he made our trip to Ubud so special. He was full of stories and is so well-informed about Ubud and all things Indonesian. My husband greatly enjoyed talking with him during our long drives.

His car is very well maintained. I was worried about tracking beach sand into his clean car, but he was very nice about it. He was great with my 3 young boys. His knowledge of English is impressive, and he has a sense of humor, too! He showed us good restaurants, a fine art gallery, and he made sure we got to watch the Monkey and Fire dances. He is very generous with his time since he charges a flat rate even if we ended our day late at night. He also carried ice cold water: a necessity in warm weather! Also, while we enjoyed the beach that he took us to in Nusa Dua, we felt no worries leaving our belongings with him in his car such as our wallets and camera. Sila is truly trustworthy.

I was really upset with another driver we hired in Ubud (Sila was already booked that day, alas!) That driver whose name begins with P. brought us to tourist trap places where I suspect he would get a commission. He also did not have any water and he asked too many personal questions and interrupted our private conversation. He also would not drive us past 5 pm even if he charged the same rate as Sila.

So if you go to Ubud and need a driver, please do hire Sila: baliwithsila@yahoo.com or www.geocities.com/baliwithsila/

Since he goes out of his way to make you happy and is generous with his time, please be generous with your tip! (***Photo shows our sons with Sila with the breathtaking Ubud rice terraces in the background...)

English Speaking Driver for Tours

I hired Agung Dena to take me on a tour of my own (rather illogical) design. While I was staying in Ubud, I had asked that he take me to Celuk, Sukawati, Gunung Kawi & Tirtta Ganga. He gave me a 10% discount, since I was a solo traveler. He promptly picked me up on time in the lobby of my hotel & we proceeded on our way. He has a nice, air conditioned car, which is quite comfortable. Gas, tolls, entry fees, temple clothing (sarongs & sashes) & his meals are included in his fee. Agung is very kind, knowledgeable & is pleasant to be around in every way. He kept repeating to me that he just wanted me to "be happy" with the places that he took me. My tour took about 10 1/2 hours, but I enjoyed every minute of it. When he dropped me at my hotel, he even offered to help me carry my purchases to my room. I will definitely hire him again on my next trip to Bali.

I Wayan Sukadana has an air conditioned car, & you can bargain with him for transport prices to/from and around Ubud, or other areas, as well. He's nice & shows up on time (or even early)!

He can be found at: Ubud, Hanoman, Main Road

Getting around with Mr AGUNG DENA

me, agung & his niece at his home

AGUNG, is a personal driver & tourist guide which I hired for about 3 days. Hiring a driver helps for you to visit the destination you desire in haste if you don’t have much time.

Now this dude is way COOL. Not only is he knowledgeable about most places in Bali, he also ‘bargains’ prices for stuff which I wanted to buy. Meaning he was helping me to get local prices without going thru’ the usual bargaining hassle.

Agung hail from ubud and is in the travel & services industry for almost 6 years. He drives a Toyota ‘Kijang’ which can accommodate 7 people easily. His price I would say is ‘FAIR’. You travel less, you pay less & vice versa. He is dedicated in serving you at his best and he encourages you to fully utilize his services. His service level is above reasonable level I must say. He carries your shopping stuffs, escort you almost everywhere, punctual at all appointments and more important he is not monetary demanding. Besides this, he provides some complimentary stuff like bottle water, face towels, cigarettes if you are smoking, toll charges, parking fee, sarong (to wear when entering temples) and occasionally free meals are throw in when you hire this dude.

The only set back for this guy is he doesn’t know any girls in Bali! ; ) or else he would be a prefect guide. Hahahehe.
Anyway compare to other drivers I hired before, he is quite alright. A must try for those who generally need a ride, a cheap ‘bodyguard’, access to local price, knowledge for good exchange currency places, good knowledge for tourist area & etc

Agung plays by the rule “honesty is the best policy’. Cayala…sama lu Agung.
