Dishonest money changers

by najjia

We had a guy pull a fast one in this wartel/internet cafe in Kuta once. He shorted us 150,000 rupiahs but we recounted in front of him and he gave us back the difference. Just ALWAYS count your money without disctraction & always right in front of them. Always be the last one to handle & count the money.

Ceremony is on going

by Rinjani

Sometimes your car slow down, sometimes you encounter traffic jam and sometimes you need to detour. The ritual ceremony of Balinese is conducting in place that takes a public space. But, the Balinese are also very sensible people. I heard from Nick, they also consider other people’s interest and they prefer to move the time from daylight to evening to conduct ceremony. But, sometimes there’s no way to move time or places because of ritual requirements. Usually there is sign to inform that there is ceremony going on. Although we encountered several slow down when I was in Bali, I was still enthusiast to see people conducting ceremony, it’s always beautiful….

Illegal Hunting

by Rinjani

The low down of having national park is that not only animal can’t read, but mostly human are illiterate. No matter how big is the signboard “No animal hunting”, and “Taking animal and plants from the national park is restricted”, there is always illegal hunting. At the time I was there, near Pura, people told us they found 7 deers and 1 wild pig death because of poison. We found one deer and one wild pig decayed. Iwan, our guide told us, previously you could see many scratches in the trees, where deers sharpening their horns. I never understand why there are people who like to cause damage for environment, and for me it is simply unacceptable for whatever reason.

Hey, There is a Snake!

by Rinjani

This cute guest was obviously not on the list of dinner attendees. While we were peacefully having a dinner in Lovina, suddenly there was a scream from the kitchen. The cook lady saw the one meter length black and white strip snake just passed by. We were storming to chase the snake, with different intention off course. They planned to kill the snake, while I planned to take a picture. And later, I won, although the picture was only last part of the snake before he disappeared to the darkness.

Who Lets the Dog Out ??

by Rinjani

Everywhere I went in Bali, there were always dogs around. I love dogs, I don’t mind to have them around. During our meals, the canines could get their part of our meals. Most of them are cute. When you are in Kintamani, you can see the dogs originally from Kintamani have thicker fur. They are so handsome and cute. People said that people in Kintamani thinking to give brand for dog of Kintamani for their original breeds. Why I put these cute and friendly fellows under Warning and Danger? Simply because some of the free roaming dogs are not friendly. They were barking and showing threatening action. So, you also need to be careful. If they bored enough, they may actually thinking to chase you, and who knows…a bite?

Monkeys

by Rinjani

The cute monkeys running around freely in some spots in Bali can be very annoying sometimes. In a place like Uluwatu, they freely help themselves to take other people’s belonging. Whatever interested them, they will grab from you. Last time, a monkey stole my minus glasses and trying to wear it as I do. Later the monkey threw it after he broke it (he found out that he has better eyes than me :) ). In monkey forest or Uluwatu, the visitor is requested to take off things like glasses, watch, necklace, earring or anything that may attract monkey gank’s attention.

Multilingual

by Rinjani

With tourism booming in Bali since beginning of 1990, the island changes into international scene in many of its spots. So it¡¦s not much surprised to find many Balinese are fluent in English. But there are also many that multilingual, even in the villages. I found one villager spoke fluently in German, France and Japanese. Language is tricky. Sometimes we do it over and over again. We thought that our language is ¡¥foreign¡¦ enough to make other people clueless what we are talking about. But, in my experiences, it is simply wrong ƒº

A Mystique Place?

by Rinjani

Bali is rich in cultural and custom. There are rituals or customs giving eery impression. But they are still amazing though. There are few things that I am curious, for example what happen if women in menstruation period entering Pura? I am pretty sure that there are many women prefer to stay silent, so that they can still enter Pura. Some friends told me that usually there is light to heavy consequences for not following the request. The light one is health symptomps, such as headache, etc. The heavy one varies. My wise friends told me that I don’t have to believe things that difficult to accept in my own faith, but they gently remind me that be a good guest and respect a holy place of other religion followers. Another time, one of the guards in Pura told us about several trance has caused. He told us that sometimes the overjoy tourist forgot to respect the Pura. For example a girl who...

Wannabe Guides

by Rinjani

In almost every tourism spot in Bali, there will be someone approaching you offer their service to be your guide. Some guides are very good. Information is useful. But there are also some people offer to be your guide although later they simply be your walking companion. The wannabe guide also can be a jackpot. Some are trying hard to show and explain to you about the place. But some have less clue. It is your option to use guide in a local spot. Nego the price first and stick with it. But if you are satisfied, tip is appreciated.
