the quake violently shook the ground - (in Lais)

Bengkulu Province lies near the Sunda Fault and is prone to earthquakes.

According to the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency and U.S. Geological Service, an 8.4 RS earthquake hit Bengkulu province. The earthquake epicenter was 105 km off the coast of Bengkulu province. There have been several aftershocks, measuring from 5.6 to 6.6 RS. The earthquake and the 6.6 RS aftershock generated Tsunami alerts that were subsequently called off. The earthquake took place on September 12, 2007 at 18 pm, prior to the first day of the holy month of Ramadhan. The earthquake was felt in Jambi, Riau, West Sumatra, Singapore, Malaysia, Srilanka, as well as in the capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta.

Fortunately in the main city of Bengkulu, where around 300,000 people live, there was not as much damage as most people would think. Even though my own house looked quite weak while the quake violently shook the ground back and forth for more than 1 minute. At least 11 people are reported killed in Bengkulu province. In Bengkulu city, the earthquake collapsed at least one building and severely damaged houses and public buildings, minor damage to homes and buildings are reported throughout the city. Electricity and telephone services were disrupted in a large area. The services began to be re-established some two hours after the earthquake.

In a district which is called Lais where most of the aftershocks have been centered, around 80% of the homes that I saw in Lais District (Northern Bengkulu ) were either completely destroyed or at least in an unlivable condition by the earthquake. Electricity, water and telephone services were disrupted in a large area.

The Bengkulu Province was also affected by a 7.9 RS earthquake in June 2000, followed by a 6.7 RS aftershock, which killed more than 100 people, injured nearly 2,800 and damaged more than 40,000 buildings.

There is so much more that I could write here, but I think you get the picture of the situation here.

Kaba trekking

People who trek and sweat a lot in hot weather sometimes get painful muscle cramps in their legs, arms, or stomach. These happen because the body lacks salt.

Treatment: salt tablets may help, but drinking a teaspoon of salt in a liter of drinking water is better. Repeat once every our until the cramps are gone. Keep calm and sit or lie down in a cool place then massage the painful parts gently.
