Sacred Bathing Place
3 more images

Water is scarce in these chalk hills, therefore the underground rivers are a lifeline considered sacred. This particular river irrigates surrounding ricefields, and where the water surfaces there is a bathing place with a simple shrine.
While you are here, find the bathing place 1 km west of the cave entrance. Take the unpaved road from the last turn left when you arrived at the cave.

Helen with mr Sahuri starting the walk

Goa Pancur is one of many caves in the Northern Chalk Hills. See also our Blora and Purowodadi pages. If you cannot visit them all, make sure you don't miss Goa Pancur. We found Goa Pancur more interesting as well as easier than Purworejo's Seplawan cave. With the aid of a guide it is not too difficult wading over 700 m through the underground river (and back). The stream runs almost level, only in a few places you have to climb over rocks. The water and the surroundings are surprisingly clean, it seems not too many domestic tourists come and spoil the place.
But come prepared: we recommend swim wear and beach shoes! In some places the water is almost waist deep. And walking bare-footed on the pebbles is really hurtful (as Theo experienced).

In front of the cave entrance is one single warung built of bamboo, run by mr Sahuri and his wife. For a voluntary contribution mr Sahuri will guide you through the cave, carefully pointing out hidden rocks and deep spots. He brings a kerosene torch, which is better than an electric torchlight. The walk may take up to an hour one way!

Directions: Kayen is on the road from Pati to Purwodadi, about 18 km south of Pati. At Kayen centre a fade green sign points east to Goa Pancur and to 'Makam Syeh Jangkung'. Follow this road past the grave of the holy man, ever straight on, when in doubt at a bend keep keading for the hills. After 4.5 km a turn left and you arrive: a grassy field with a shallow lake and broken floating restaurant on the left. Drive on to the end where you find the warung of Bapak Sahuri and the cave entrance.

Rain will fill the lake up
3 more images

When we visited the lake it was the end of the dry season, and surprise... there was practically no water left in it, cattle grazing at the lake bottom. Yet local people affirmed that during the rainy season the lake fills up to the brim. So we may have to return in say February or March.

The site is nice enough. It is possible to walk or ride a bike for 2.7 km around the lake (no cars), and there is a lookout hill near the barrier. Along the road to the lake are many kapok trees, an important source of income.

River crossing

Mount Muria is relatively unspoilt, it pays to seek out some waterfalls. They are not big, but provide good destinations for nature walks.
"Grenjengan Sewu" can be translated as thousand falls, which is to say that the stream falls in numerous steps. However, it is not easy to reach all those steps. Villagers will point you to the bottom of the stairs. At the end of the dry season the stream was not big, but enough for taking a shower.
From the road it is only half an hour's hike. But we made a wrong turn, going too high up. Did not regret it, really, because of that we discovered more streams and falls on the mountainside. A villager carrying wood led us back to the right track.

Location: Grenjengan Sewu falls are located at Jrahi village, Gunungwungkal district, at 485 m above sea level, 37 km from Pati town along the road.

Directions: Take the main road north to Tayu for about 23 km, until the junction where you go left to Gunungwungkal. At 6.5 km from the junction, in Gunungwungkal turn right descending to a bridge and then ascending again. At 7.5 km turn left, at 9.8 km right through a valley again and and a fork keep ascending left until you reach a small Vihara building at the entrance of Jrahi village. From the Vihara walk the path down into the river valley. Then follow the river's left bank, cross over to right bank, and at a nangka tree cross over to the left again. Ascend slowly through paddy fields, over boulders, through the river until you reach the foot of the falls.
