Pati Things to Do

  • Favourite cave: Goa Pancur (I)

Goa Pancur is one of many caves in the Northern Limestone Hills. See also our Blora and Purowodadi pages. If you cannot visit them all, make sure you don't miss Goa Pancur. We found Goa Pancur more interesting as well as easier than Purworejo's Seplawan cave. With the aid of a guide it is not too difficult wading over 700 m through the underground...

  • Favourite cave: Goa Pancur (II)

Water is scarce in these limestone hills, therefore the underground rivers are a lifeline considered sacred. This particular river irrigates surrounding ricefields, and where the water surfaces there is a bathing place with a simple shrine. While you are here, find the bathing place 1 km west of the cave entrance. Take the unpaved road from the last...

  • Gunungrowo Indah irrigation lake

When we visited the lake it was the end of the dry season, and surprise... there was practically no water left in it, cattle grazing at the lake bottom. Yet local people affirmed that during the rainy season the lake fills up to the brim. So we may have to return in say February or March. The site is nice enough. It is possible to walk or ride a...

Only to be had at a warung in Pati: nasi gandul. It's rice with meat and a special - somewhat sweet - sauce. You choose your own piece (or pieces) of meat, which the seller than cuts into smaller pieces with a pair of scissors! The portions are small, if you are very hungry you may want two portions. But the price too is small, just Rp 8,000.-We had...

  • Chinese and Sea Food

In the evening there are a lot of foodstalls at the town square, but if you want something better, take the escalator up to the Plaza Restaurant. Imagine the service: when we left they switched the escalator from ascending to descending, so we didn't have to walk down the stairs. The food was good quality and reasonably priced, we had our fill for...

Pati Off The Beaten Path

  • A road accident

It happened on the winding road through the limestone hills between Pati and Purwodadi. We had to stop because they were trying to pull a bus on the road. Trying to, because the last we saw of it one of the front wheels was still stuck in the gutter. How did the bus get there? It must have missed the bend coming downhill, plunging one-and-a-half...

  • Historic source Sendang Sani

It's easily found on your way to Gunungrowo Indah lake, but rather disappointing: the swimming pool is closed 'awaiting an investor'. Next to the pool is the historic source Sendang Sani. A warden readily turns up to show you the place, where reportedly Sunan Kalijogo was slighted when his servants took water from the source before he himself did....

  • Majapahit ceremonial door

In Rendole village only 3 km from Pati a wonderfully preserved ceremonial door is on display. It is said to date from the Majapahit era (14th century). At least the carvings are in the Majapahit style. The story goes that a certain Kebo Nyabrang was carrying the door to the court of Sunan Muria, in an effort to be acknowledged as his – the sunan's...
