If you are on a budget or just want to try street-side food, go to Bakmi Progo. Here you can still eat your fill starting from one US dollar, and the taste is surprisingly good. Unlike many places where the prices are small, the portions are quite generous.
It's a family run business and has been around for a long time. Your food may be prepared by mom, dad, or one of the now grown-up children. Everything is deep-fried on one fire. You may have to wait your turn when there are many customers, including those who come for a take-away.
Hours: Bakmi Progo opens up shop by nightfall (6 pm) and closes by 10 pm.

Nasi Goreng or Bakmi Goreng Rp 9,000; Cap Jay or Fuyung Hai Rp 10,000; Babi Kecap Rp 12,000. Kolobak or Koloke Rp 13,000; Nasi Putih Rp 2,000; Jeruk Panas drink Rp 2,000.
Another restaurant popular for a family dine-out. Also on our list when we don't want to do cooking at home.
Favorite Dish: Koloke (chicken meat in sweet-sour sauce) Rp 21,000. Sapi lada hitam (black pepper cow's meat) Rp 22,000. Gurame (fish) starting at Rp 40,000.
It's in the neighbourhood of the International school, run by Americans, and a favourite of the local expat community. They have the usual Indonesian food, but above that international dishes of better quality than the Indonesians make.
Favorite Dish: Pizza, spaghetti, taco, salads, and a choice of delicious coffees.
Directions: From Osa Maliki bypass take the road to the International School (everyone can point it out). On this road, Jalan Nakula Sadewa, pass by the IS until a main crossing at 2 km from Osa Maliki. Here Jalan Bima is on your right. After 300 m turn into a narrow dead end where The Bizztro with parking is at the end.
Lesehan is a local way to lunch or dine. It means you sit in a gazebo on the floor at a low table.
Mina Kencana is a favourite lesehan restaurant in Salatiga. It is a fish restaurant with gazebo's arranged among fish ponds, and with a view on paddy fields. If you do not like to sit on the floor, you may opt for chairs and tables. There is a choice of fish dishes, always prepared with fresh fish from the ponds. When we treat our guests from abroad here, they always love it. The local population seeks out Mina Kencana for meetings and celebrations.
By the way, Mina Kencana is literary Javanese for goldfish. However there are no goldfish on the menu.
Favorite Dish: Fried gurami fish in sweet-sour sauce. It tastes as good as it looks.
You should also try gurami fish with kecap sauce.
The usual modest prices and modest portions of a Javanese warung. But the food is tasty and good value for money. And you do not pay for the ambiance: within the town borders yet among paddy fields looking out on Merbabu mountain.
On weekdays people have their little business meetings here, during weekends bu Rini's is a favourite for a family dine-out. Also a good place to relax with just a snack and a cool drink.
You can have a nasi goreng spesial with cool fruit juice for just one euro (USD 1.50). If you choose something from the fish menu, you will spend more.
The warung takes it's name Joglo from the typical Javanese unwalled guest space under a roof with steep center part.
Open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., except Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Directions: Jalan Mawar is a dead end branching off from Jalan Imam Bonjol (the road to Muncul swimming pool). From the traffic lights north of the university walk down the bus route to Solo until the next traffic lights. Turn right into Jalan Imam Bonjol. The first bend turns left, the next one right. At this bend walk straight on into Jalan Mawar.
Favorite Dish: Fresh drink: Juice ceria

Mrs King's is very popular among locals not staying at the hotel. We also like to order there a take-away meal. Allround Chinese and Indonesian menu, reasonably priced.
Favorite Dish: Shiang Hay Soup, Lu Fung, Cap Cay and many others.
On weekdays Kampoeng Kopi Banaran is a favourite rest stop for a cup of coffee and a snack. But is is much more than that. They have about every recreation facility on can think of: swimming pool, tennis court, camp ground, kids' play ground, outbound sports, fruit garden... So on weekends the place is rather crowded with local recreants. And of course you can have your wedding party or business meeting here.
If you want to walk the fruit garden or the coffee plantation, you have to ask for permission, but it is easily given.
Kampoeng Kopi Banaran is a successful agro-tourism project of the state-owned PT Perkebunan Nusantara IX, which runs 15 plantations and 8 sugar factories in Central Java. In colonial times the plantation was known as Asinan.
Favorite Dish: Have a taste of the coffee grown and processed on the grounds. And buy a packet to take home.
Chinese food 'warung' (stall) with strong Javanese influence. Located at Jalan Progo, turning left from main street Jl. Jendral Sudirman just befor 'Reksa' cinema.
Not to be missed are the Nasi Goreng, Bakmi Goreng, and Fu Yung Hai. You won't get food this good anywhere else.
They have opened up a branch on Jl. Ahmad Yani and Jl. Pattimura, but for authentic experience go to Jl. Progo.

In the morning, this "Pecel" warung is an excellent place to eat. Opens from 8 to 11 am, it is located just behind the "Madya" theatre. Walk through a (very) small paveway beside the theatre, and you're there. If you took motorcycle with you, park it beside "Madya" for Rp300.
The people at warung Pecel Madya are very nice. No wonder a lot os UKSW students eat there everyday. For the Pecel, you can choose abundant varieties of toppings. From "bakwan jagung", "martabak", to "iso babat"
If you are a growing boy and appears that you like to eat much (like me), best chance is that you are offerred the "Borobudur banjir" or "The flooding Borobudur". Meaning you would eat a lot of rice with flooded peanut sauce. Other thing you should never forget is the "Onclang" fried with duck eggs because you will never find it anywhere else
Favorite Dish: Pecel complete with Onclang egg, Bakwan jagung (corn) served as "Borobudur Banjir"
Used to be referred as Nasgorsu or "nasi goreng susu" which highly associated to the size of "susu" of the owner. Google this Indonesian word and go figure! This warung is located in front of "Gereja Pentakosta" church. Go straight until the last red-light intersection of Jl. Jenderal Sudirman (kota) and make a right turn.
In this warung you will eat just beside the street and it is very nice to see people and cars passing by. The main dish is "Nasi Goreng" which fried with "iso", "babat", and ... "pete". You could customize your choice, of course. Not everyone fond of Pete but give it a try anyway.
The "nasi goreng iso babat" is the favorite of all, but try the "babat gongso" for another fine eating experience. If you prefer chicken then "nasi goreng ayam" is also delicious. This warung place is open day and night, almost 24 hours straight. Accompany your plate with "es jeruk" for a really pleasant evening dinner!
New restaurants appear like mushrooms in Salatiga, Most are mediocre and cater for a student's purse.
Lotus Coffee and Resto newly opened on the road to Kopeng is different. The menu is varied and complete, the card for drinks is as long as the one for food. One can sit in the garden when the weather is fine, or in a veranda open to the garden when it is raining. Prices are moderate, we had dinners for an average price of Rp 40,000-50,000 per person.
Only drawback: the restaurant was built on a steep slope and the ascent from the parking may be difficult for the elderly or disabled.
Favorite Dish: The items from the menu that we tried were all good. Examples of food: Special nasi goreng Rp 15,000; sop buntut goreng Rp 27,500; garden salad (lettuce and fruit) Rp 13,500; chicken kuluyuk Rp 18,000. Examples of drinks: Wedang uwuh (javanese herbal drink) Rp 7,000; green healthy drink Rp 18,000; ice coffee shake Rp 16,000; Javanese coffee Rp 7,000.
Cafeole has been open for a couple of years now (July 2013). It was establised in a precolonial house in a lot still the original size right in the centre of town. They made good use of the sizeable plot, the green garden is gorgeous! One has the choice of a table in the converted house, one of several pavilions in the garden, a lesehan pavilion (the Indonesian way sitting in the floor at a low table), or a table in the separate coffee lounge.
We have dined here several times, with friends and just the two of us, attracted by the ambiance. Unfortunately, each time the food was a disappointment, certainly not what one may expect for the price. So we won't go here again. The card offers Indonesian, Chinese and Western menu. The portions are small (especially the spaghetti), the food tasteless and seemingly put together in a hurry. The apple pie was a disaster. They surely need to find a better cook.
One positive: they remain open in daytime during fast month (Ramadan).
