old atmosphere with delicious european delicacies. from cookies, ice cream, coffee and tea to fine dining. we like this resto a lot.
Favorite Dish: we love to have dinner at toko oen. the oldest european style resto in semarang, owned by mr and mrs oen [they also have a branch at malang, east java and still open nowadays].
toko oen's wiener schnitzel [nick's fave] was superb, same as tenderloin nz steak [my fave]. also domino ice cream [nick's] and tutty frutty ice cream [mine].

Taking the exit road south from Semarang you pass by Gombel where the road climbs steeply. On your left you have a fine view over Semarang town, especially when you turn into the Taman Tabanas parking (parking fee Rp 2000).
There are three restaurants in a row where you can have your meal enjoying the view. Alamanda Garden Restaurant is the most attractive, being built on three levels hugging the mountain side with a rather overgrown garden. It is also the most expensive, but still cheap with an outlay of typically Rp 50,000 per head.
There is a large choice of seafood dishes, but also the usual Indonesian and Chinese food is available.
Below Alamanda is the Panorama restaurant, cheaper but rather rundown. Next higher up is Alam Indah restaurant, similar to Panorama.

As a regular visitor to Semarang I can never go past this restaurant. Its an original Thai theme right down to the uniforms. The chef has 15yrs experience with Thai food and now they have delicious Indian as well. It has a great pub built inside that is family friendly (unusual for Semarang) and a great place to catch up with most of the Semarang ex-pats to get the local gossip and places to go (and stay away from) there is satellite tv sports/news. Great priced drinks and very good happy hours, clean and fresh air cond. Also a large book exchange ! Western food is also available at the bar if your hanging out for a burger or fish and chips.
Favorite Dish: Their Tom Yam Talai Spicy Seafood Soup is by far the best I have ever tasted outside of Thailand. They have weekly specials and theme nights also, sometimes a Thai Barbeque. The new Indian menu though not totally traditional Indian is exceptionally tasty. I have a weak stomach but have NEVER been sick here even from the salads. It must be one of the cleanest eats in town. All food is served fresh and hot with excellent service.

Furniture from bygone days. The walls full of photo's from pre-war Semarang, you can also by a booklet of them. A few cupboards full of memorabilia.
Semarang Restaurant has the same atmosphere as better-known "Toko Oen" on Jalan Pemuda. Yet it has one advantage. Both resto's have French windows, but at Toko Oen they never open them any more: too much noise and dust from busy Pemuda street. Semarang restaurant is set back from Gajah Mada street, so the French windows are always open.
Favorite Dish: The food is delicious, the fruit juice always from real fruit.
Prices are small. We had for lunch a gado-gado at Rp 15,000 and a nasi langgi at Rp 16,000 (excl. 10% tax).
