    Car Hire

by bkarjee Written Dec 27, 2005

If one hires the vehicle for one day, please understand that the vehicle is available to you for just 8-10 hrs. For every additional 1 hour, they will charge IDR 40-50 K. But if you hire this vehicle for 3-4 days (which I did), you need to do a good level of negotiations to keep the cost as low as possible. In my case, I negotiated with Kresna Travels, located at Pravirotaman Street at Yogyakarta to settle for the rate of IDR 400 K per day, and this would include petrol cost, drivers food and lodging.

    Transportation in Central Java

by bkarjee Written Dec 27, 2005

All the places are very well connected by road. Public buses are the best options if looking for budget travelling. Otherwise, one can book a MPV like Mitsubisihi Grandis/Toyota Kijang for as low as IDR 400 K per day. These vehicles are 7-seater MPVs and quite comfortable, with aircon, and a very good suspension system to absorb the shocks of rough patches of road in interior roads. The ride is smooth. Recently, there was an upward revision of the petrol prices (the prices more then doubled to IDR 4500 per liter of petrol) and hence the hiring cost of these vehicles has escalated. Earlier, the same vehicle could have been hired for as low as IDR 300K with a driver. Just for information, the vehicles come with a driver, who in most of the cases is also a good travel guide and speaks English (or at least understands English well and speaks a bit of it) well. So if you dont understand Bahasa Indonesia or Javanese, the driver will be a useful contact point and translator. This is a big help for foreigners who have problem with language. Dont conclude that the vehicle will be at your disposal for full 24 hrs. So it is very important to get a good driver who is conversant with local culture and practices. In my case, the driver provided by Kresna Travel Agency was a very young gentleman called Wisnu and was gem of a man. He was to stay with me for 4 days and gave a vivid description of Javanese culture, Indonesian beliefs, had a good knowledge of Javanese history and was very familiar with all the places in Province of Yogyakarta and Central Javanese province.
