If you ever decide to travel like a local in Indonesia and take the bus, do bear in mind that like in any other Asian city, the driving habits are generally atrocious. Lanes are happily ignored and driving on the road shoulder is common. Accidents are not uncommon too. I saw at least one badly smashed bus enroute to Solo. The passengers were all unhurt but stranded by the side of the road.
Time also stretches when you travel on a bus. Always factor in one hour to buffer your journey as Indonesia is the land of jam karet ( ‘rubber time’). Many stops will be made in town to pack the bus to full capacity and this include human passengers, yowling babies, livestock and vegetables still fresh with earth. Stops will also be made for the driver to take a kretek(cinammon cigarette) or toilet break.
Perhaps the only saving grace is the bus fare. It'll only cost you a couple of dollars(usd) to travel 100's of km. Bring plenty of small change and pay the exact amount or risk paying extra. It helps to count in the local lingo.
