Tangkuban Perahu is a volcano, 25 km north of Bandung. It's the only crater in Java accessible all the way by car as far as its rim. This is Bandung's most famous natural attraction.
The name of Tangkuban Perahu means ‘hull of overturned boat’ cos of the folk legend of Sangkuriang, where he falled in love with his own mother, Dayang Umbi. To anticipate her son’s propose, Dayang Umbi bid for conditional that Sangkuriang must designing a boat in a night. When he failure to design the boat, Sangkuriang get mad and kick the boat, so it land in the overturned.
Tangkuban Parahu is an active volcano 30 km north of the city of Bandung, the provincial capital of West Java, Indonesia. It is a popular tourist attraction where tourists can hike or ride to the edge of the crater to view the hot water springs up close.
It's not really cold up there...a shawl or a light jacket would do. There're a lot of locals selling some stuff for souvenirs. They will follow u wherever u go...pastoring u to buy whatever they're carrying
There'll be a ranger explaining things to u n somewhere along the explanation he'll try to persuade u going to the other 3 craters located further down...where u can see the hot water springs. They would say it's just a 20 minutes walk...but we all know that's a bunch of lie...it's actually longer than that n u'll need suitable shoes to track down the mountains. The ranger will sort of volunteer himself to take u down there...do ask how much exactly is he charging n be prepared for more locals selling more things down there.
U have to rent a car to go up there. I don't see any taxis up there. Car rental charges differently...so do ask around.
Lembang is a Dutch colonial resort town located just north of Bandung, the hill town of Lembang is renowned for its pleasant climate and abundance of flowers, fruits and vegetables. It is also home to several beautiful restaurants, near the flower market and some chic hotels. The town sits on the flank of Tangkuban Perahu (upside-down boat) volcano. In Tangkuban Perahu Nature Reserve, we can see the active crater and follow a number of nature trails. Also in the vicinity of Lembang, are the beautiful Maribaya and Cimahi waterfalls and the Ciater hot springs complecs, for rejuvenating body and mind.
Go inside the crater of a volcano! You can organise a driver through the tourist office in Bandung to take you to Tangkuban Perahu National Park. You will have to pay the entrance fee and tip a guide if you want one - I recommend it but it is not essential. It is a nice walk down to the crater and the hot springs with a circular walk back through the forest (about 40 minutes). Be warned the smell is something else!
Visited Bandung in early March 2008. The weather in this town is cooling which sits about 700m above sea level. Went on a day trip to Gunung Tangkuban Perahu(also known as the Mountain of the Overturned Boat).
If you are into volcanoes and trekking then this is closest you can get to a live volcano.
When you are here, do visit the hot springs(a guide will take you in/out) and try soaking your feet in the hot springs(they are hot!!) and hard boiled eggs cooked with Hot Springs(they taste soft and yummy!) The weather in the mountain is cooling, if you have some time you can take a stroll along the edge of the crater...
The northern part of the city is hillier than the rest; the distinguished truncated flat-peak shape of the Tangkuban Perahu volcano (Tangkuban Perahu literally means 'up-turned boat') can be seen from the city to the north...
The volcano trip involves a jungle trek into the mountains leading up to the hot springs. Do wear sneakers/ trekking shoes or at least crocs as the path can be slippery. The volcano is semi active, lately I have heard that since the recent earthquakes the volcano is active, i do not know how true this is. At the hot springs in the mountain, they sell raw eggs that you can cook in the boiling point of the springs. You sit along the rocks and dip your tired feet in the warm water.
The trek begins down a path with quaint huts selling crafts. Some made from interesting wood cuttings as the wood like rings of old trees bear testament of the volcano's activities. Must see to understand.
Further down the mountain, there is also a public hot spring pool that you can actually soak your whole body in. Bring along a change of clothes, swimming attire is not necessary.
