    Toko Oen: Time travel
  • Satisfaction:
  • Toko Oen is originally an ice cream parlour, where they serve homemade ice cream and they still have it until today. No preservatives or other chemicals added for their ice cream, still it taste smooth and nice.
They still keep the old furniture as it was before. But unfortunately when i visited, it was Idul Fitri, public holiday in Indonesia. The place is packed with customers, so my purpose of hanging around to feel the atmosphere of the old days didn't happen. The crowd was spoiling the ambience. There seems no time to imagine about the old days. where the gentlemen wearing white hat and white long shirts and pants, the ladies with high collar dress, sat there enjoying their ice cream and pastry. I would return to the place on my next chance. Who knows it won't be as packed as my last visit.

I like the ice cream of old times, original of toko Oen with no preservatives added. Taste so pure and vintage. :)
Order sirloin steak, medium rare, but the steak served as well done...sigh. I can say that this is not best, rather "the worse?" They set up certain amount for credit card payment (i think minimum Rp.100.000 of purchased, about USD11).

Toko Oen is a nostalgic place for a rendezvous, having a lunch that is more or less based on Dutch needs. The first restaurant was opened in Yogyakarta (1922) and, soon Jakarta, Semarang, Surabaya and Malang followed the example of the succes in Yogya.

The family of Oen knew exactly how to enjoy the Dutch colonials, serving just bread and cake while listening to the old music of Dutch, English and Javanese songs, played by a music group. Their icecream and Dutch cookies got famous to the visitors, included court officials of the Kratons from Yogyakarta and Solo, as well dignitaries from the Netherlands like Queen Juliana.

The family of Oen sold all of their Toko Oen's, only in Semarang the restaurant still belongs to the family. In Malang the restaurant still is a nostalgic heritage, where you can enjoy fried rice, noodles, Dutch croquetes, beefsteak, spring rolls, satay whlie listening to the music of old Javanese song (on request, and the managers as well the servants love it!). Right in the center of Malang around the alun-alun (where the tree of waringins are) next to the Catholic Cathedral (Gereja Katolik) and the Mata Hari Mall this is a must, especially for Indo's of the Netherlands ...

Once you enter this place, it drawn you back to the Indonesian-old-time-atmosphere where the building's details are old and antique, one room in front has a long table and the wall is full of Malang B/W historical picture from the old days. Few antiques are place around the Rumah Makan such as; various colourful javanese masks, various kind of old radios, various kind of old typewriters, and different sizes of kuda-kudaan (wooden rocking horse).

Friendly service with traditional looks: waitresses wears kebaya and batik (javanese traditional fabric) skirt, waiters wear traditional black suit and blangkon (javanese man headpiece).

Find a comfortable way to suit your way either in lesehan (sitting on the tikar floor) or regular table/chair. The menu offers you variaty of traditional javanese cuisines.

The thing that is not so good about this place is the restroom. There's no toilet paper available, it's in poor condition.

Try the eggplant and tempe with spicy peanut dressing serve in stone plate (cobek), never found this in any other place, and it taste so good. The fried chicken is a whole chicken (with head still on) cooked in javanese sweet taste, so tender that the meat and bone seperate easily. It's a must try dish. Also try the rawon (east-java-traditional-soup) serve in the bowl place on the pot with warmer under it to keep it warm.
