Sarinah Department Store, Malang, is equipped with floor after floor of designer clothes, electronics and appliance shops, furniture showrooms, sporting goods, and fast-food courts. The all-alit Sarinah Supermarket is not that cheap. I got lucky to buy some great Batiks with special prints!
What to buy: To get an idea:
> souvenirs, with wayang kulit and wayang golek puppets, leather bags and woodcarvings are a speciality ...
> Batik from Madura, brass lampsand ornaments, bamboo decorations, stone statues: bronze figurines, basketry, paintings.embroidered needlework, woven handicraft, textilefabrics
> and woodwork & fretwork, ratanwork, wooden furniture, ceramics, onyx & marbleware, platework
What to pay: My Batiks were around 80 $ a piece, ... not that cheap!

Although most of tourists directly dive into the well-known Sarinah Supermarket we had a lot of fun in the Mata Hari Mall, just across the square "alun-alun", and opposite Sarinah Supermarket. There's a superb jumble of foods and second-hand goods. At first floor you'll find all of the gold shops ...
What to buy: When you want to buy touristly stuff for your friends, then go visit the Mata Hari Mall near the central market. I found some very nice wayang-dolls, some good Cerita Rakyat-books (fairy-tales for children) and even a very cute dress for my aunt. Also Indonesian needs are very cheap (like "obat nyamuk", the stuff you use to protect your skin for mosquitos)
What to pay: So much cheaper as in the big malls
