A combination of museum and cafe, this House of Sampoerna is an interesting place to visit.
The museum belongs to the Sampoerna family, one of the conglomerates in Indonesia. Located in the original building where the founder of the HM Sampoerna company started the cigarette business, the museum displays some of the memorable items related to the company. Visitors can see the the traditional making of cigarette.
Sometimes there is an art exhibition here such as painting exhibition
Sunday to Thursday: 9 AM - 10 PM
Friday & Saturday: 9 AM - NOON
Besides animal exhibitions, there are also bear & otter presentation, elephants presentation, wildlife presentation, birds of prey presentation and tiger & lion kingdom show. The shows are only played on the weekend when a big amount of local tourists visit the zoo. What attract me the most are Indonesian animals like Komodo dragons, Indonesians elephants, giraffes with short necks, orangutans and so on. In general Indonesian animals are small except Komodo dragons which are the biggest lizards in the world.
Attention: Opening Hour- 8:30-16:30 on weekdays; 8:30-1645 on weekend
Surabaya gathers a lot of Chinese. The city government arranges this area specially for Chinese. In the evening it becomes a night market where vendors sell satay, fried rice, fried noodles and little fancy stuffs from China. Compared to night market in Taiwan, it's really a small one but it recalled me the memory when I went to some nightmarkets at countryside in childhood... By the way, kya kya means "wandering around " in the dialect from the southern part of Fukien Province (Taiwanese as well).
This is the biggest Mosque in Indonesia as I was told be fellow Indonesians in Surabaya. This Mosque is really huge as I got to take a walk around the mosque with a friend. Unfortunately I was`nt allowed to take pictures as I was stopped by security but I did manage to take some from the outside. There is also many food stalls outside the mosque so if you wanna catch a meal and check out the mosque its surely a great site.
Mt Bromo is a active volcano and is easily reached from Surabaya. Its takes more or less 3.5 hours from Surabaya. I went to Mt Penanjakan to get a good view of Bromo and Mt Semeru which is the highest mountain in Java. Mt Penanjak is higher than Mt Bromo so you its worth the trip. Mt Bromo is also nice for the Sun Rise as everyone says and being on Mt Penanjan I can see why.
Tugu Pahlawan which is the Hero`s Monument in Surabaya. Its shaped like a rocket and I`ve seen similar monuments like these in Jakarta and Malang. This monument is there to commemorates those heroes who died during the independence war.

The sub marine monument is located in the bank of Kalimas River, on the east corner of Surabaya Plaza. The brief history of this Sub Marine was started a long time ago. The ship was called KRI Pasopati with the body number of 410. It was one of the elements of Indonesian Sub Marine Army Unit on the east region. This Sub Marine once belonged to the Russian Whisky Class and it was received by the Indonesian Government on December 15, 1962. In the National Indonesian Navy Force (TNI-AL), the Sub Marine of this kind has the main duty to destroy the enemy's sea line (anti shipping), to do the spying activity, and to do the silent raids. When this Sub Marine dedicated itself in the National Indonesian Navy Force, this Sub Marine had done many operations to defend the Indonesian independence and even in the "Trikora" operation to gain Irian Jaya (at that time Irian Barat) back to its mother land. At that time, this Sub Marine was in the front line. Fourteen mediocre officers from TNI-AL had ever lead this Sub Marine as the commander. The last commander on this Sub Marine was the Navy Lieutenant Colonel (P) Imam Saki. This Sub Marine ended its dedication as the Indonesian War Ship (KRI) in 1994.

An active volcano, Mt Bromo is the most popular tourist destination in this area. The mountain is located in Ngadisari-Probolinggo, about 3,5 hours driving from Surabaya city.
Mt Bromo can easily be reached by car. However, visitors need to walk, ride a horse, or take jeep to get close to the mountain itself. We can climb up the stairs to go up to its peak.
What you can see here?
- The sunrise. Many visitors go to this mountain to see the sunrise. You can stay in the hotels there and get up in the morning to walk up the summit, or drive down there at midnight from Surabaya. I have done both ways.
- The mountain areas. The area around Mt. Bromo is beautiful to enjoy.
- The Hindu temple. There is a small Hindu Temple in this area. If you are interested, you can stop a while there.
I write more about Bromo Tengger National Park on my Tengger Caldera page. Click the link below
Well, it is not a beautiful bridge certainly. However this bridge is well known for its history, related to the Independence of Indonesia.
In the battle between people of Surabaya and Dutch-British armies, many died in the area around this Jembatan Merah. Therefore, the bridge is painted red as a rememberance of the blood of the heroes.
Chinese Square is basically what is called "China Town" in other countries.
This business district is well known area in town.
In the evening, this Kembang Jepun street is closed for vehicles. This area is called "Kya-Kya" Center (in Chinese, "Kya-Kya" means "walking around"). So people can walk around and enjoy this area. There are many food vendors also. Visitors can stop and have dinner there.
Wage Rudolf Supratman is one of the Indonesian heros. He is the composer of the Indonesian National anthem.
The statue of WR Supratman in this picture is located in his graveyard.
I put more photos in the travelodge.
The north region of Surabaya is the oldest area in town as the first settlements started from the north where the Port is located.
There are many nice buildings around the Old Town area, related to the Dutch Colonialism in the past.
