    Sunrise from Mount Penanjakan viewpoint

Sunrise over Negeri di Awan (c) ukirsari

The best place to see the sunrise over the mountaineous range of Bromo-Tengger-Semeru Nationak Park. Wake up early about 3.25 AM then passing sea of lava sand using 4WD jeep, hiking up to the viewpoint at Mount Penanjakan [2770 m]. If you want to have trekking to this point, it takes about 2 hours from Cemoro Lawang.
I am proudly addressing this sunrise and the clouds and the mist all over as Negeri di Awan [taken from a song of Katon Bagaskara, a famous Indonesian singer], means: a land behind the clouds

    A palemoon rises ....

    Moon over horizon (c) ukirsari

An unforgetable moment to see the sunrise is where I see the horizon in gradation colors from orange, light orange into light blue and blue. Sun will comes out soon but there, still a palemoon 'hanging' on the sky [see the small white one on the left top]. Remind me of a theme song in Lord of The Rings III, performed by Annie Lennox:
across the sea, a palemoon rising, the ships can carry you home ....
but here are not ships. there are ... clouds

The marble map of Bromo (c) ukirsari

On the main entrance, we can find the map of the mountain range of Bromo, made from marble. Here, you can read about; Mount Bromo (2,392 km above sea level), Segara Wedi Lor (2,432 km), Segara Wedi Kidul (2,490 km), Widodaren (2,614 km), Gunung Batok (2,440 km --and I always called this as 'Pudding Mountain' 'coz its shape is so geometrical, just like my favorite pudding made by my beloved Mum :D), Gunung Kursi (2,501 km) and Gunung Jantur (2,703 km). Gunung means 'mountain', and segara wedi means 'ocean of sands' (desert).

Bromo's caldera with Hindu temple(c) ukirsari

In inner rim of Mount Bromo to direction of its peak or summit, can be seen the whole of plain lava sand in the caldera. It's also a moonscape scenery with a pura [Hindu temple] nearby. And the clouds were roll-over. During mid-day, the temperature is hot, since the sands easily absorb the heat from the sunlight meanwhile in the night, the temperature going to zero! Several of my crazy fellow when I was in high school doing crazy with open tent in this area. Me? thanks but no, thanks :)

Another nice place to see the sunrise after viewpoint at Mount Penanjakan is Mount Bromo [2392 m] herself! Wake up at 04.30 AM and start to climb the steep stairway. A mystical condition sometimes happened in this climbing >> ask your buddy who climb together and the answer always vary :)

    Cemoro Lawang, Bromo (c) ukirsari

Cemoro Lawang or Cemara Lawang taken from Java lingo, literally means: pinewood gate. Since this small-lively district known as a place with "thousand" pinewood around. So flush and greenery. My brother sometimes address it as "somewhere in Europe." Yes, Buddy, it's sooooo cool!
Cemoro Lawang situated right on the edge of Tengger crater with many access to reach lava sand of Bromo and climbing to the summit of Bromo, Batok, Kursi or even Semeru.

    The summit

The main attraction of climbing Mt Semeru must be its summit. Having a closer look of its crater (Jonggring Saloko) is thrilling the climbers. It is adviced not to be too close to the crater.

Also, climbers can enjoy great view of the sunrise from the top.

    Mt Semeru

One of the most notorious volcanoes in Indonesia, this mountain is a favorite place for mountain hiking lovers. Mt Semeru is the highest mountain in Java Island. Both domestic and international hikers have climbed its peak (3,676m). However, some of them have become the victims of this mountain's volcanic activities or its dangerous surroundings. Still this mountain is admired by those who seek adventures in the wilderness.

    The sun is still hiding

Waiting for the sunrise on top of Mt Bromo.
What you need to see the sun?
    - a sacrifice. Forget your long sleep. Must get up around 3:30-4:00 AM.
    - warm clothes. It's pretty cold there in the morning. It's windy sometimes
    - patience. Waiting...... please.....
    - good camera
    - good position. The benefit of arriving there first or earlier than others is that you can choose the best place. The crowds can block your view and your chances to get the best pics.

The rests.... it's up to you -- You can bring snacks and warm drink up there if you want.

I travelled to Mount Penanjakan through Tosari and I would advice you get a really strong vehicle to ride up there. Normally you can hire a jeep to ride up. The view from here is best as its the hightest point to get a view of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Its cool up here so do dress warm when you come here.

    Hindu Temple

There is a Hindu temple right at the bottom of Mt Bromo. How it managed to stand there for so long...who knows. According to my guide the local people come here once a year for some festival as they believe there God and Goddess lives in Bromo.

The temple is a reminder that some of the Hindu Tengger people stayed behind when the Majapahit empire fell and many others fled to Bali.
