Route: Surabaya >> Malang change into L300 at the terminal >> Tumpang >> Gubuk Klakah >> Ngadas >> Jemplang >> south-west Bromo
If you like, you can hire the jeep in Mt Bromo National Park to go around the area as well as to take you to Mt Penanjakan where you can see a great view of the whole Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park like the pic here.
You can take a train from Surabaya to Probolinggo, then continue from the train station in Probolinggo to Mt Bromo by a taxi. The train tickets are Rp. 30,000 for business class (no air-conditioned) and Rp. 45,000 for executive class (air-conditioned).
I have no information about the cost of a taxi from Probolinggo to Mt Bromo.
Please note that a taxi (in small cities in Indonesia) means a mini van (not a sedan) carrying many passengers, and it is often no air-conditioned.
The place is too big to walk around, and it's only 4 WD car allowed.
The best way to move around the Bromo area is to hire a jeep with driver (we can share with other people because it can bring up to 8 people). We can find jeep anywhere in Bromo, maybe this is the biggest jeep community in the country.
They will offer us to rent their jeep to see the sunrise from Penanjakan since we arrive at the hotel. The driver will wake us up in the morning. Price varies so don't be hesitate to bargain. The price is depend on the season, during peak season it would be higher. Usually around 200.000 Rupiah.
It’s the most convenient way to go to Mt. Bromo from Surabaya.
There are many travel agents and car rentals, which you can contact to rend a car.
Current rental prices are Rp.450,000-500,000 (approx US$50). The price is for a day trip, and it includes driver and gasoline.
If you don't want to have walk or trekking, rent a 4WD jeep to reach Bromo crater, Gunung Penanjakan viewpoint also another villages in outer Bromo rim. The price maybe vary, from Rp. 75,000 - Rp 125,000. Please bargain before you enter the jeep :)
The best to get to the Bromo Mountain is by bus. From Surabaya Joyoboyo Bus Station board a bus or minibus about 3 hours to Probolinggo. Get up early and try to get to Ngadisari, below Bromo, the same day. From Probolinggo to Ngadisari it costs about 1$ by minibus. You might have to change buses at Sukapura.
In the dry season (April-May), the road is passable all the way to Ngadisari. In the rainy season, you might only get as far as Sukapura and have to continue on vegetable trucks (which come through at around 1500). From Ngadisari to Cemoro Lawang, walk or take a little horse either the day before or start out very early in the morning of your climb...
Best is to spend the night at Ngadisari or Cemoro Lawang ...
My transportation is include in the package. This is the only way you could reach on top of Tengger Caldera and Mount Bromo. Unleast, you trek all the way up there. Othet then that, you could rent a jeep but it adviseable to have a guide that knows well around the area.
You can go to the main bus station “Bungurasih” in Surabaya and take an “out of town” bus to Probolinggo. There are two kinds of buses – one is air-conditioned (called “PATAS”) and the other is no air-conditioned. I have no information about the costs of the buses.
From Probolinggo you can take a taxi to Mt Bromo.
Feeling tired to walk on the sea of sand in Mt Bromo area??
You can take a horse ride as an alternative. It is not expensive. I did this on my first visit to Mt Bromo. The horse will take you up to the foot of Mt Bromo, then you can climb the stairs to the top.
