    The Crater of Mt Semeru

    by blue_sky04 Written Mar 11, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Keep in your mind that this volcano is an active volcano and its volcanic activities can be deadly. Avoid being TOO CLOSE to its crater or approaching the crater from its southern part of the area because of the lava path and the toxic gasses.

    LEAVE ONLY YOUR FOOTPRINTS

You'll pass this sign when climbing the Gunung Bromo! No matter how much you've heard about it, you won't be prepared for this ethereal, unforgettable spectacle. Some tourists get reckless and, getting a real crazy steak in their head they attempt to climb right into the crater, down inside Bromo's legendary, dangerous crater.

So warning signs try to keep you cool; respect the National Park rules, do not take any plants, do not drop letter, take only photographs and ... leave only your footprints! Feeling great and wanna be a Bromo hero, keep in mind when falling down into its maw ... that's it!!!

    Volcanic dust

by RoyJava Written Apr 19, 2005

    painting-royjava

Take care of your photograph equipment! Some places can be very dusty, like fine flour. Volcanic dust is very fine and will really do a job on your camera, getting inside the lens, causing damage, and making it difficult to focus.

It is said the sacred couple Joko Seger and Roro Ateng had to take their last child, Kusuma, into the sand sea of Bromo to appease the Gods. When prayers and ceremonies aren't performed in the right way, the sand sea will be disturbed causing the very fine volcanic dust ... (the name "Tengger" is said to derive from the last syllabes of the sacred couples' name ... AnTENG and SeGER)

Mt Bromo is an active volcano!!

by aukahkay Written Feb 4, 2006

If you plan to ascent Mt Bromo, please remember that it is still an active volcano. Its activity is unpredictable and in recent years, people have been injured or killed by spewing hot larva and volcanic rocks. A Singaporean boy was killed in 2004 when volcanic rocks spewed from the caldera and hit him.
Also, please do not climb down into the caldera - this is foolhardy. Many tourists have perished inside the caldera or have been overcome by sulphurous fumes. Respect the volcano!
