MacDonalds: Places NOT to eat
MacDonalds does not exist in Balikpapan and I am thankful.
There is an abundance of Crab restaurants that litter the town and each one adds their own special sauce to the cooked crabs. I love crabs but find the amount of effort one puts into retrieving the succulent meat often outweighs the overall enjoyment of eating it. Nevertheless, you get an enormous quantity of crab so it is a matter of rolling your sleeves up and digging in. My favoourite restaurant serves theirs with a chilly barbecue sauce....ummm.
There are also a number of good Chinese restaurants that offer a multitude of dishes. Some times there are just too many to choose from that you spend more time deciding what to order than actually the time it takes to eat it. All of them are good if you have a taste for Chinese food as I do.
Of course, there are many many Indonesian style restaurants and what we call "warungs" that are dotted along the side the road. If your stomach is up to it, then these are the best places to eat for next to nothing, selling satay, barbecued fish or chicken, nasi bunkus, fried rice, noodles and basically anything and everything you could imagine.
Lastly, I am able to get a good old Australian meat pie from a specialised Deli and I do treat myself to one of these occasionally.
Ocean's - The Fish Connection: Nice view and good food
I think this is the most representative restaurant in Balikpapan (besides those ones in hotels). It's located right on the beach where u got the nice view. U can dine in the verandah or if it's too hot get inside the aircon resto. The service is good, the food is excellent.
Favorite Dish: Fried Crabs!
