resto se'i baumata: delicious timorese smoked beef

se'i suwar suwir (c) ukirsari

se'i is the traditional smoked beef and pork a'la timorese and well-known throughout east nusa tenggara. such as flores, rote and sabu islands.
the resto sell se'i beef per kilogram and you just need to mentioned how many kgs you want to have it. normally, for 4 person 1 kg is enough. and the price is included steam rice, veggies and assortments.

Favorite Dish: absolutely se'i suwar suwir. made from beef [or pork] cut into thin but long pieces [not yet sliced] and put spices on it, leave it about hours and then put in the 'smoking wooden room'. so, the beef still looks quite red even already welldone smoked.

then cut them into sliced. and put in hot plated, mixed with onion, green and red chilis. very delicious! served hot.

Terminal Kota - Night Food Market: Best Food Ever
saltwaterandsails profile photo

2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

saltwaterandsails 54 reviews

After the sun goes down, all of the locals head to Terminal Kota for the night food market. There are about 50 street vendors selling a variety of local indonesia meals.

We sampled as many of the dishes as possible, and loved almost every one.
The prices are unbelievably cheap - like 50 Australian cents for a large plate.

There are tables and chairs on an elevated eating area in the centre of the vendors. There is a feeling of being amongst all the action.

Favorite Dish: Some of the Dishes include:

Nasi Goreng - Fried rice with choice of Chicken, prawns served in a soya sauce, onions, leek, and omlet strips.

Rendang - spicy beef in coconut sauce

Soto Ajam madoera - Indonesian chicken soup. with a mix of vegies and hard boiled egg.

Satay Chicken -

and the list goes on. A very strong recommendation to come here and try the food - as and with the people of Kupang.

Karang Mas Chinese Restaurant: Chinese or is it Indonesian?
saltwaterandsails profile photo

2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

saltwaterandsails 54 reviews

All the restaurants we saw looked very basic. The decor shabby, and the dim lighting probably hidding even scarier things.

When looking for this place we walked past it, not realising it was the chinese restaurant we were searching for. The waitresses were very friendly, and attentive.

The food was a mixture between Chinese and Indonesian, and was quiet good. the Bingtang beers here are much cheaper than Teddies bar too.

There was a back dinning room with windows that looked across the water. But the bars and the size of the windows made a room fall short of its potential.

Roasted fish at the night market

Every day by nightfall part of Siliwangi road in Kupang is closed and converted into a food market.
Come here to enjoy a cheap meal in the open.
We asked them 'What do you do when it rains?' - 'Oh, we put up a tarpaulin!'

Favorite Dish: Especially the roasted fish is excellent.

A good place to dine out is Restoran Nelayan. They have nice gazebo's where one can take advantage of a little sea breeze.
Restoran Nelayan serves seafood as well as other Indonesian dishes.
