Labuhanbajo Things to Do

  • Rinca Island

We took the two-day Rinca and Komodo Islands tour. But if your main purpose is to see komodo dragons and you are pressed for time, take a one-day tour to Rinca Island. We saw many more komodo's on Rinca than on Komodo.Rinca Island is closest to Labuan Bajo, so you do not spend too much time on the boat. The one-day tour to Rinca Island usually...

  • Booking a Komodo National Park tour

We arrived at Labuan Bajo without a pre-arranged tour. We found that it is easy to book one, either through one of any agents on main street (Jalan Yos Sudarso) or by making a deal with one of the boatmen waiting at the charter boat jetty.(1) We booked a 2-day tour to Rinca and Komodo Islands through 'Putri Komodo Tour' run by mr. Jeffry Buana. Of...

Crazy about the Ikat-method (special hand weaving, Ikat is a warp-faced fabric in which all the colours are applied to the warp yarns by a multi-stage, tie-dye resist method prior to weaving) I went for an Ikat-look at Labuhan Bajo. I heard about Sumbawa Ikat's traders brought to Labuhan Bajo, so a good chance.

What to buy: So lucky I found the beautiful red Ikat from Sumbawa (see pic). The seize is of a big shawl, and when wearing the Ikat material is growing more beautiful. At Ende I was able to buy the black Ikat from Sumba (see link). So if you're lucky bring a wonderful ikat home ...

    SUMBA Ikat

What to pay: About 8$, and can tell you the same Ikat product in the Netherlands costs about 150$ !!!

Labuhanbajo Local Customs

  • Local custom at Nunang

To supplement our tips on Nunang and lake Sano Nggoang, here is some local custom we happened to observe.(1) Monkeys and dogs go well together, especially when one or both of them are young. Labuhanbajo Tourist Traps

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

One of the most frustration things about travelling in Indonesia is "jam karet" (rubber time), timetables are not to be trusted when you are travelling on decided when you depart and noone else. Same with confirming, what is needed all of the time! So watch the delays, cancellations and overbooked flights!

We experienced at the airport of Labuhanbajo (after re-re-re-confirming) our seats got delayed at time of boarding. Talking over and over again (in Bahasa) I managed to get away and, however my 2 friends had to stay ...

Unique Suggestions: Especially on the Nusa-tenggara airports schedules can be disrupted in minutes, having some frustrating experiences for you. Fortunatedly my friends could depart for the next morning, so if you haven't planned some time into your schedule ... mama mia!

Fun Alternatives: I cannot emphasize enough the need to confirm, and re-re-re-confirm flight bookings as soon as you reach your destination!

Early morning after our first night at Nunang guide Mama Ana accompanied us to what they locally call Taman Savanna or Savannah Garden, a grassy field on the hill overlooking lake Sano Nggoang. • Lake Sano Nggoang

Sano Nggoang is the largest lake in Flores. Its surface area is 3 square km and its greatest depth 600 m. It is a crater lake and some volcanic activity is still going on at its bottom. The water has a high content of sulfur, therefore fish cannot survive in it. But some unique crustacaeans and invertebrates live in the lake. At certain seasons...

Labuhanbajo is a sportsman's playground, particulary so, for the water or beach enthusiast. There is good diving and snorkeling between Komodo Island and Labuhanbajo. There is a dive experience for every level of diver.

    Good spots are >>>

Pulau Bidadari - Waicicu Beach - Sabolo Kecil
    & Sabolo Besar

Equipment: Better bring your own equipment, however there are some dive shops at Labuhan Bajo. Be sure the equipment for rent is safe, 'cause there is overuse. Catch some good info from the hotel-owner, the fishermen and the well-informed traveller you'll meet for sure ...
