Pulau Flores Local Customs

  • Rinjani's Profile Photo

by Rinjani Written Dec 30, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Many parts of the Flores Island are off the beaten paths. If you are into exploring remote traditional villages, there are chances that the villagers are not often meet the travelers and you are likely to be a center of attention with group of kids following you around. Few tips below are hopefully can help you to prepare during your journey.

    1. Smile and friendly.
this is universal language that help you to be welcomed everywhere. Generally Flores people are very friendly and they welcome you with open arms, eager to show you around and helpful. Language might be a barrier, but often genuine interest and effort to build communication are the best bridge to overcome the obstacles.

    2. Dress conservatively.
This is most appreciated. Wearing short is fine, but no hot-pants and knee-length is advisable. Tank top is fine, but also bring cardigan or scarf for layering.

Expect that you might be asked to wear sarongs or Ikat traditional weaving when visiting village like Todo. I found that local villagers are happy when you are wearing Ikat sarong from their village. Once I wore Ikat sarong from Bena in Wae Rebo village, politely people asked me to change the sarong with the sarong they made locally in the village.

    3. Open shoes before entering the house

    4. Always use your right hand for shake hand, pointing direction, take or give stuffs to other people.

    5. I found that people like to be photograph, but always ask first.

    6. No public display affection please. Husband and wife in Flores are rarely seen holding hands and public display affections are not encouraged here.

    7. Be patient with personal questions. This is especially for woman solo traveler like I did. Question about marital status and age were often.

    8. Be prepare, most accommodations in the villages are very basic. Some are less than minimum standard for many Westerners find in their country. If you want to stay over in the village, you can bring your own toilet tissue, blanket (or sleeping bags) and sandals, if you have to shower in the river.
