    Hiring a motorbike

    by theo1006 Updated Dec 12, 2009

Standard fee for an ojeg (piggyback motorbike) for a day is Rp 75,000 (August 2009). Anyone may volunteer to drive you around. We went around with guide pak Adie and a friend he called up.

But you can also self-drive around Rote, if you find someone eager to rent out his bike. And unlike on Bali, you don't need to bring an international driving license, as long as the traffic remains scarce. Said a policeman we met: "we do not bother to check on driving licenses".

    Pak Adie, English speaking guide

    by theo1006 Updated Dec 12, 2009

Having good experience with mr Ony Meda of Lavalon B&B in Kupang, we followed up on his recommendation, and let his friend Albert Ballo know when we would arrive in Ba'a. And there he was on the quay, with a colleague and two moterbikes at our service.

Mr Ballo, pak Adie for friends, is a teacher of English at a local secondary school. He would like to be a full time guide, but that does not bring in enough to support his family. Apparently he has no difficulty adapting his class hours to his duties as a guide.
We went on a full day outing with him to see some less frequented sights of Rote (next tip).

Pak Adie makes one feel one of the family. He may ask you to appear in his class for a talk in English with the students, and invite you to his home.

His fee is the same as that of Ony Meda, Rp 100,000 per day for guide services, Rp 75,000 per day for the use of his motorbike.

    The Express Bahari fast ferry

    by theo1006 Updated Dec 12, 2009
Express Bahari at Tenau harbour Kupang
    3 more images

Perhaps the most convenient way to get to Rote island is the daily fast ferry Express Bahari.
According to schedule it leaves 8.15 am from Tenau harbour near Kupang, and arrives at Ba'a at 10 am.
The return voyage is from 11.15 am to 13 pm. But schedules may vary - the sea between Timor and Rote can be very rough, so check beforehand.
The fare is about Rp 90,000 for economy class and about Rp 110,000 for VIP class (august 2009). The latter meaning that you get a numbered seat in an air-conditioned room. Book at your earliest convenience so as to get a VIP seat.

    Hiring a car in Ba'a

    by theo1006 Written Dec 11, 2009
Rent car crossing Kuli river bridge

It is possible to charter a minibus for getting around Rote island, although they may technically not be in good shape.

We negotiated for the car of the owner of Ricky and Tiberias Hotels. He is pretty hard to bargain with, wants to know your exact itinerary, and charges more if you want to take a road in bad repair! Well, he owns one of the few good sedan cars on the island.
Count on Rp 500,000 for a days rent (August 2009).
