RICE TERRACES

by pangtidor

My friends from other Asian countries were proudly saying to me, ‘Oh, we have wonder of the world in our country, the rice terraces.’ It was the first time for me to appreciate the rice terraces when I go home, though it was common scenery for me before. Indonesians like other Asians consume more rice daily. Since the Indonesia’s landscape is mostly mountainous, the farmers plant their rice in a unique way to get more space on the hills/mountains. It creates the rice terraces, one of the spectacular scenes in the villages. You may see the good ones in Java and Bali. In fact, Jatiluwuh rice terrace is one of the tourist destinations in Bali. The better view of rice terraces will be on the planting and shortly after the planting time when you can still see the edges and the borders clearly. Shortly before the harvest time, the rice stem will be longer and full with rice. During this time,...

PERAHU; THE TRADITIONAL BOAT

by pangtidor

PERAHU (Indonesia traditional boat) will be one of the things you will see on the beach. It is a small boat, could bring 4-6 persons (small to average sizes) to the sea. It is made from the trunk of the tree and every area will have its own favorite tree for the boat. Perahu will be made by 1-2 people using the simple tools, just to shape the boat and to dig some space in the middle for seat place. It will take less than one week to finish one boat. Take a walk to the fishermen’s village near by the beach and you may watch them making their own perahu. It is a small boat, so the ride on it will not be comfortable with the fishy smell.

THE FISHERMAN

by pangtidor

Beside farmers, many Indonesians work as the fishermen, especially those who live at the beach side. Whenever you visit beach areas, take some time to look at the local traditional fishermen. Many of them are still using the traditional way of fishing with their own handmade net and boat (see my other tip: traditional boat). For the smaller boat, 2 fishermen will be going for fishing and you can see them from the beach shore. They will just for fishing for few hours and will offer you their fishes (see the main pictures). For the bigger one, many fishermen will be on the boat and they will go for fishing for one full day or even days. The fishes will be more and will be going to the local traditional market or fish market. Just ask the local people when they will come from fishing (see the second picture). You will have fun seeing them and they will be happy whenever you take pictures....

Indonesia: Three Different Time Zones

by pangtidor

Indonesia lies along the equator between Malaysia and Australia, covers the bigger size of width than the length. It makes Indonesia having three different time zones: Indonesian Western Standard Time (WIB: Waktu Indonesia Barat), Indonesian Central Standard Time (WITA: Waktu Indonesia Tengah), and Indonesian Eastern Standard Time (WIT :Waktu Indonesia Timur). Its western time (WIB) is 7 hours ahead of GMT/UTC and applied in Sumatra, Java (including the Indonesia capital: Jakarta), Madura, West Kalimantan, and Central Kalimantan. The Central Time (WITA) is 8 hours ahead of GMT/UTC and covering Sulawesi, Bali, Nusa Tenggara (Lombok-Sumbawa included), East Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan. The other one, the Eastern time is 9 hours ahead of GMT/UTC, applied on Maluku,Ternate, and Irian Jaya/Papua. Indonesia does not have daylight-saving hour as it has only 2 seasons a year. So beware for...

The Stinky Delicious Fruit:DURIAN

by pangtidor

It is a green rounded fruit with though spiky skin, when you open it you will find some white cubicles inside, filled with durian meat. Though it has intolerable smell to the westerns, it is one of the favorite fruit for most of Southeast Asians. The local durians are great though it is seasonal. During its season, usually December to March in most of the places, you will find them anywhere even the road sides. You may even find a place in the malls for a ‘sophisticated’ durian eating style. You may find imported or local durian anytime in the big supermarket, but they are totally different from the local people’s during the season. If you want to eat durian, don`t forget to bring water and tissue to clean your mouth and hands. To get rid from the unpleasant durian odor, you may pour the water in its cubicle, drink water directly from there and wash your hands too. Just restrict yourself...

All Season Tropical Fruit

by pangtidor

You may enjoy all season tropical fruit in Indonesia anytime you travel here. The fruit like bananas, papayas, pineapple, and coconuts are commonly seen throughout the year in Indonesia. Indonesia has many types of banana, but the best one for me will be the ‘pisang mas’, the smallest banana (as small as your little finger). Indonesia’s papayas are sweet especially the small ones whereas some of the pineapple may be sour. You have to try to drink the fresh young coconut water and its pulp/meat. Some may find the water isn’t really tasty, but it will be part of your unforgettable tropical journey.:-)

The Greetings and basic Conversation

by pangtidor

The universal greetings like Hi and Hello are acceptable by the local people. You may impress them and enjoy you travel time more with the greetings in Indonesians’. Though Indonesia has more than 500 different ethnic languages, Indonesia has its national language, Bahasa Indonesia and it is spoken and understood by all Indonesians. Here are some Indonesia’s greetings for you. The way you read Bahasa Indonesia is similar to the way you read in Spanish. Good morning : SELAMAT PAGI. Good afternoon: SELAMAT SORE. For around the midday time: SELAMAT SIANG. Good night/good evening; SELAMAT MALAM. You may use some basic conservation too. Thank you: TERIMA KASIH. How are you: APA KABAR? How much: BERAPA. Where: DI MANA. When: KAPAN. Need some more help? You may email me for English-Indonesia translation and I will be very happy to help you.

Indonesian Rupiah

by pangtidor

Rupiah is Indonesia’s currency that is still trying to recover from its big crisis in late 90s. Rupiah will come as banknotes and coins (aluminum-silver coin) with the images of Indonesia’s national heroes, heritages, traditional custom/ceremony/dance, flora or animal species. Though the letter’s print out will be in Indonesia language, you can recognize the money’s amount by seeing its number (English number). US$ 1 will be around 9,000 IR for September 2007’s rate. Check the website for the latest rate. Practically, Indonesia don’t have the smaller nominal money (like cents), so you will spend your Indonesia money in ‘hundreds’ for few candies. ‘thousands’ for a bottle of mineral water, ‘hundreds of thousands’ for the domestic flight ticket, and ‘millions’ for one tour package.

Street Vendors

by pangtidor

Everytime you are at the traffic lights, bus/train terminal or parking lots; you may see the street vendors. Local people call them as ‘pedagang asongan’ or ‘pedagang kaki lima’. Don’t buy any food, snack, syrup, or ‘opened fruit’ from them. Mineral water (still with the plastic seal on the cover) will be safe and it is an other instant way to get cold drink on the streets. Don’t use straw from them too. Newspaper will be sold at the reasonable price too. It could be inconvenient when they try to knock your car’s window to offer their things so just wave your hands to get them off from you. In case you have to buy something from them, just open one third to half of your car’s window.
