Indonesia (including Bali) visa tip

by maigaomav

many tourists to Indonesia from ' visa on arrival' countries tell me they believe that the '30day visa on arrival' is the only tourist visa available to them. However, their local Indonesian Consulate can issue them with a 60 day visa prior to their trip.

Photo Time!

by tna

If you are big-nosed, yellow-haired, light-eyed, and hairy monster (i.e. Caucasian) and visiting some far-off site that locals may tourist to as well you may find yourself the object of many photographs. Years ago, when we were first approached by a group of locals to have a picture taken with them, we got really upset. But now, we've learnt to bask in the attention. Remember, you may be one of the few 'foreign monsters' that these locals ever get a chance to be so close to, so be a good ambassador for the rest of us and just SMILE!!

begging children / poor people

by Nicola2004

There is hardly any more heartbreaking sight than a child begging you for money. You see their cute face, their big eyes and this can make you feel really guilty when you think of your living standards at home... It can be hard to resist, but DO NOT give them money if you intend to stay longer otherwise suddenly you will be surrounded by 20 more kids all asking you for money. If you're in a poor area you can buy them some food or even give them some cash just before you leave the place. Don't bargain too hard when buying things from obviously poor people. It is such a cheap country already and you still will get the things for a ridiculously small price. What we sometimes don't see or don't want to see is the poverty in their eyes, their looks, the envy when they see someone who can afford to travel to other countries. It won't hurt you to pay a little bit more. For you it may not be a...

Komodo Dragon

by kiwi

Seeing the Komodo Dragon was pretty high on my list of things to do. But I will have to return and take a tour to Komodo Island to see them properly. Meantime the best I could do was this photograph, taken at Taman Safari Park.www.tamansafari.com is 78 kms from Jakarta and quite a long tedious drive, but well worth it when you get there. Being up in the hills it is cooler. They have an amusement park and swimming pool, so there is something for everyone to do when you get there. Plenty of food stalls too. They are open 0900 - 1700 hrs daily. The Komodo Dragon is very special being the largest living lizard on the planet. It truly is a relic from a past era, very large and daunting although the one I saw was certainly not fully grown. With scaley skin and a forked long tongue this reptile is truly out of the story books. They think there are around 5000 left in the wild here in Indonesia,...

Nothing new to say about Bali!

by worldkiwi

Everyone does it anyway, but I have to say that Bali is one of the most magic places in the world. The whole island pulses with a mystic quality which is in the air you breathe! Wandering through sawah late in the evening as the twilight darkens and passing a young girl putting out the night's offering at a roadside candi. The sun and sand at Sanur and Kuta. The terraced hills of inner Bali. The friendly people of Bali...Bali - full stop.

Ride a becak down Jalan Malioboro.

by worldkiwi

On my first trip to Indonesia as a student, in 1989, I really enjoyed my time in Yogyakarta. We were lucky enough to meet the Sultan and Sultana in their palace. We also visited Borobudur and Prambanan temples just out of the city. One highlight was the "mail run" to the post office to send our postcards home to New Zealand. We used to take becaks down Jalan Maliorboro. A becak is a type of pedi-cab.In 1995, when I returned with the same school (but this time as a teacher), I don't remember seeing so many becak. However, the post office was still there - a fine old Dutch colonial building, resplendent, at the end of Jalan Malioboro.
