Provinces and regencies

by biawak

Indonesia is divided into Provinces (Propinsi/Provinsi) and Special Areas (Daerah Istimewa, Daerah Khusus) which are level one districts. These are usually run by a Gubernur/Governor. Under each level one division we have level two districts. These are called Kabupaten (Regency) and run by a Bupati (Regent). These are approximately the size of a US county. Some are large and some are small. Under the Kabupaten we have the Kecamatan (run by a Camat) and Kelurahan (run by a Lurah). These would be on the level of small towns and villages. Even the metropolitan capital city of Jakarta we have Kelurahan, so they don't always mean "village". In some areas They have "Desa" run by a Kepala Desa. Some Kelurahan is just one desa while others have several desas in their jurisdiction. There are no "Desa" in Jakarta even though the city is sometimes called "the Big Village". I hope this will help...

Rice fields

by eddymario

Go and take a walk at some rice fields, around Ubud (Bali). We asked a taxidriver in Ubud to bring us to some nice rice fields. So he dropped us after a 15 minutes drive in a small villages (don't remember the name). Where it was lovely to walk around and we enjoyed the beauty and peace of this little village.

Bali

by iwent

It is a very good place to start your Indonesian travels. It it's a place to acclimatise. It is a place which is not all that different from other tourist destinations. Once you have seen the Indonesian way of life I would advise you to visit other places, where fewer tourists come.

Sumba

by iwent

Sumba is visited by fewer tourists than the other Indonesian islands. The wet season lasts from December to March. The rest of the year it is a very dry island. It is different from the rest of Indonesia as it is not a volcanic. There are beautiful, isolated beaches with pure white sands. Unfortunately there is no accommodation nearby. Air Merpati flies to Waingapu. Waingapu is also served by Pelni ferries from / to Kupang (Timor), via Sabu or Ende (Flores). The trans Sumba highway is relatively flat, straight and well-surfaced. The usual means of transport is bus or bemo. They are small and overcrowded. Besides they stop every two metres to pick up new passengers. Even if they come apart at the seams, more people are stowed in and you are kindly asked to move over. The good thing is that they collect and drop you off at your hotel. The bad thing is that if you are the first to be...

If it is not raining it's a pleasant town to walk about, if it's raining you'll be soaked in less than a minutePadang is hot and wet. If it is not raining it is a pleasant town to walk about. If it is raining you'll be soaked is less than a minute. This is a good opportunity to try Padang food.

labuanbajo, Flores

by iwent

AIR CONNECTIONS:All flights in FLORES are Air Merpati flights. There are no flights within Flores. If you want to fly to destinations in Nusa Tenggara you route will be via Kupang or Denpasar. Air Merpati flies small Boeings and Fokker aircraft.Fokker F70 has insufficient bagage storage. You may be on the flight but your luggage is not. Don't worry it will arrive eventually, although not necessarily the next day. Many flights were cancelled due to the economic crisis. If the economy picks up so may the flights.Pelni ferries dock at Labuanbajo, Ende Maumere and Larantuka.SEA CONNECTIONS:Pelni has connections to Waingapu on Sumba, Sabu and Kupang on Timor. Sailings are weekly, two-weekly or monthly. Several times per week there is a ferry from Labuanbajo to Sape (Sumbawa). These ferries do not stop in Komodo or Rinca. BUS CONNECTIONS:All major towns on Flores are connected by mini bus. For...

Medan

by iwent

Medan. Big, noisy, congested and above all hot or wet, or hot and wet depending on the season Medan has no obvious sights to enthrall the visitor yet it's worth a visit. Lovers of (Dutch) colonial architecture should walk along Jalan Jend A Yani: the old post office, a circular building with authentic post office counters, the former hotel De Boer, now Hotel Dharma Deli. One of its innovations in colonial times were the 'mosquito-free rooms'. Windows were enclosed with a fine-mesh wire gauze so that people could sleep without mosquito nets. In the Tip Top Cafe Dutch planters used to spend a Sunday afternoon, drinking jenever and reading six-week old newspapers on the veranda. These days the veranda, the cane chairs and the Dutch menu are still there. On the menu: kroket, bitterballen, saucijsebrood, uitsmijter, ijstaart, moccataart. If you can't stand the heat and humidity any more go to...

See the jungle along side the roads

by lmkluque

The big cities, the villages and the countryside, which in this case is a gorgeous jungle. Near a large city this area was set-aside for blind people. Cars have no access to these streets, but they lead to every house in the kampung through their back doors. This is just one of the reasons I was impressed by the care, the people I met, took of everything.
