An Indo's philosophy on how to avoid a tsunami

by balisunshine

As quoted by Bog Lastari, a local cleric and businessman,'There is no better way to preventa tsunami from happening, but to bring yourself closer to Allah. No scientist can predict whena disaster will strike. It is in the hands of God.As long as the sounds of people chanting still reverberate on earth,God will postpone the doomsdayeven let alone a tsunami.'

At a moment when much debate is going onabout a Pornography Bill within the world's most populous Muslim nation,it may seem ironic that a new Indonesian filmtouching the subject of polygamy would come out.As quoted in the Khaleej Times on line,'It is a satirical drama,' director Nia Dinata explains to AFP. 'I show in my own way that these women are not happy. My film is about choice.''Polygamy too was long-lived in the sultanates of Yogyakarta and Solo, dating from the 17th century up to recent years.'For more readings, click on:Article

Sedikit Sedikit Bahasa Indonesia!

by jungles

Outside of the main tourist areas, most Indonesias speak very little English. Taking some time to at least learn the numbers and a few key phrases in Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) will greatly enhance your travel experience. Fortunately, Bahasa Indonesia is very simple and easy to learn, even though the words themselves are very different from their English equivalents. Here are some examples of how you can use to a few words to say several useful phrases:pagi = morningmakan = eatselamat = good, as in a greeting, wish, or blessing you say to someonejalan = walk or streetOk, now using just these four words, you can also say:Good morning = selamat pagiBreakfast = makan pagi (lit. morning eat). Helpful to ask if it's included in the room price of a hotel, which it often is. Have a good trip = selamat jalanBon appetit = selamat makan (lit. good eat)I'm just walking = jalan jalan....

Give and receive with Right Hand

by traveldream

It's the culture in Indonesia to give and receive things with the right hands if not both. Giving something to someone using your left hand is considered rude. The right hand is considered the "good" hand, which we use to give, receive, eat,... while for dirty things like cleaning up after finishing our business in the toilet, uses the left hand.

making a promise

by Nicola2004

In indonesia people expect you to always stick to your promise. Here in the west we sometimes are very casual with promises, but an indonesian person will feel truly offended if you promise something and don't stick to it. You can use this custom when you're in quiet areas where there are some pushy sarong sellers. Promise them to buy something on your final day at their stall. They will come up to you again but when you repeat your promise in a firm but friendly way they will smile and leave you alone immediately. Whereas if you buy something on your first day they will continue pushing you to buy more on the next day. This only works in rather quiet areas (for instance Kuta/Lombok, etc) otherwise you'll have to make thousands of promises ;o)

Your Asian Bathroom

by Gage17

Indonesia was my first exposure to the real Southeast Asia, and my first night I was fortunate to have my own bathroom (for a good price). As you can see from the picture, for the bargain price, I had a toilet/shower combo, which is not all that uncommon in Asia.I find it worth mentioning that although there may be a western-style toilet in the bathroom, you must flush it the old fashioned way. See the bucket in the photo? That's for scooping up some water from the large bucket (pictured center) and tossing it in the bowl to flush down all your fun stuff. Enjoy!
