Based on the Malay trade dialect, Bahasa Indonesia is the national language of the Republic of Indonesia. It unites the 200,000,000 people of Indonesia, whose native tongue may be one of the over 300 distinct languages or regional dialects. Bahasa Indonesia uses the roman alphabet but some of the pronunciations are slightly different (for instance, their "c" has a "ch" sound). The Indonesian language has no specific equivalent to the English "hello", but instead uses greetings specific to the time of day.For greetings in Bahasa Indonesia, say"Selamat Pagi" for morning, "Selamat Siang" for afternoon, "Selamat Sore" for evening and "Selamat Malam" for night. To say thank you in Indonesian, say "Terimah kasih".
