Keep your camera handy in Bali!

by worldkiwi

Bali is a particularly fascinating part of Indonesia. Balinese Hinduism is a uniquely attractive aspect of the island because it permeats every feature - from the way people act, to the everyday scenes you will encounter. Keep you camera handy because you never know when something amazing will present itself!

Indonesian language

by bellatrix

Based on the Malay trade dialect, Bahasa Indonesia is the national language of the Republic of Indonesia. It unites the 200,000,000 people of Indonesia, whose native tongue may be one of the over 300 distinct languages or regional dialects. Bahasa Indonesia uses the roman alphabet but some of the pronunciations are slightly different (for instance, their "c" has a "ch" sound). The Indonesian language has no specific equivalent to the English "hello", but instead uses greetings specific to the time of day.For greetings in Bahasa Indonesia, say"Selamat Pagi" for morning, "Selamat Siang" for afternoon, "Selamat Sore" for evening and "Selamat Malam" for night. To say thank you in Indonesian, say "Terimah kasih".

Ikat of Sumba

by iwent

You can't get around it. You will most probably have bought it. By now you know all the ins and outs of weaving and the backstrap looms. Yes, Sumba is the best place to buy ikat.Ikat is an ancient weaving technique whereby each thread is individually dyed before weaving. The cloth is patterned by the way the threads are arranged on the loom

Market labuanbajo

by iwent

This fishing village clearly benefits from the tourist traffic. It's becoming less sleepy and more geared towards tourism. New homestays seem to open every year. It's the best starting point for Komodo and Rinca. Various people offer their services. It's easy to charter a boat. There are also tourist offices offering all inclusive trips to Komodo and Rinca. The regular ferry to Sape on Sumbawa no longer docks at Komodo. There is a lively fruit and vegetable market on the main street.

by Pierre_Rouss

Sumatra and Kalimantan are at least 97% Muslim. That brings with it all muslim cultural related tips : they pray a few times a day, don't use your left hand to give or receive something, no pork, etc...Fondest memories : Being awaken at 5 AM in the morning by prayers sung through loud speakers for EVERYBODY to ear and listen to. Same thing late in the evening while relaxing on a patio.

There are a lot of monasteries and holy places on the 'Island of Gods'. Take a guide, which is really cheap (at least it was in 1995: 25$ a whole day!! Transportation included!!) and travel through the island.

by sandravdp

The people from Indonesian are very kind. They are polite and sometimes will try to speak your language. On Bali most people are Hindus. They offer flowers in tiny baskets they plant on the sidewalk. Don't step on it! When greeting, never offer your lefthand, they think it's your dirtyhand. The hand that wipes your behind. Indonesian try to sell you their things. Never buy their food at takeaways it has been lying there for ages. Also watch out buying other things. Most labelthings are fake (a rolex watch is not real e.g.)When invited you can visit a dance or funeral. Dress properly. They like you to wear a long dress and a hat.

by sandravdp

The main religion is Hinduism at Bali Island, most other Indonesian islands are muslim islands. One thing you will see everytime of this religion are the offers for the gods on the streets (little flowerbaskets) and the drawing / puppet etc. of the good God Barong.
