Just east of Sulawesi, the Sula Islands are a magnet for logging companies that have devastated their forested interior.
Nevertheless, the capital Sanana has one of the best preserved forts in the region, and I found some of the most idyllic, Maldives-like atoll islands in Maluku off the north coast of Taliabu, the largest island in the group.
Mangole, the third major island, is mostly interesting as a transport hub.
The fauna of the Sulas is similar to that of Sulawesi and includes the strange babirussa, but also several endemic species.

The northernmost part of Maluku, Morotai is a large, hilly island off the northern tip of Halmahera. It was an important American base of Mac Arthur during the second World War. Other than its military history which should fascinate war buffs, I found Morotai of little interest, though it does have some fine beaches and pretty off-shore islands right in front of its capital, Daruba.

Once famous for producing the very finest wooden ancestor figures in Eastern Indonesia, these flat and barren islands are now better known for their herds of livestock. They also produce ikat.
Moa is the largest island, and has recently been chosen as the site for the administrative centre for Southwest Maluku Regency. It has huge herds of buffalo grazing on its savanna, some fine white-sand beaches, and skull-caves.

Stretching between Makian and Bacan, elongated, hilly Kayoa itself is rather unattractive with poor-looking Makianese and Bajo villages.
However the smaller islands to the west are lush with fine coral reefs, and tiny Goraici and Lelei in particular boost perhaps the very finest white sand beaches in North Maluku.

These islands in South-East Maluku are most famous for their ancient megalithic structures, traditional weaving, woodcarving and dancing, but also have fine beaches.
The regional capital of Saumlaki is located on Yamdena, the largest island in the Tanimbar group.

Bacan itself is a large island off southern Halmahera. It has North Maluku's highest mountain and third most important historic sultanate. It is also famous locally for its monkeys.
The sultanate was once based on neighbouring Kasiruta, which is now less populated and offers more pristine nature.

    The endemic Obi cuscus
    by hunwagner
Almost the southernmost group of islands in North Maluku, the Obis offer relatively few attractions. Those few are all natural: a few endemic species of wildlife, plus some good beaches and hiking spots. The largest island of the group is Obi itself, followed by Bisa.

South of Moti, Makian is another historic clove island dominated by a dangerously destructive volcano, whose coasts are home to two distinct, staunchly Muslim ethnic groups.

Maluku's third largest island, Buru has a mountainous interior with a hidden lake, Danau Rana. The coastal areas also have fine beaches, but facilities are very limited outside the capital, Namlea.

The smallest of the Lease Islands, quiet little Nusalaut is just south of Saparua.
It offers Maluku's oldest churches, an old fort, excellent snorkelling and pleasant walking.
