Java is the political,...

by eManWithG

Java is the political, geographic and economic centre of the Indonesian archipelago. It's a relatively small island, (approximately the same size as England) but has a population of 112 million, accounting for 55% of the country's total population. The island is long and narrow in shape, with a string of volcanic mountains punctuating its spine. It was on Java that the Hindu-Buddhist empires reached their zenith, producing architectural wonders such as Borobudur and Prambanan. When Islam came to the island in the 15th century, it absorbed rather than erased local cultures, leaving Java with a mish-mash of historic influences and religions. A strong conciousness of ancient religious and mystical thought carries over into present-day Java, providing a bulwark against wholesale modernisation.

The best thing about Indonesia is that what ever type of music is playing at a club or bar, there is always a celebration. There are never any snotty club-kids or high class wealthy clique roaming the place. Casual, any trust me, a ton of fun!!!! Alot of Hip-hop, Reagea, some disco, and I even found some jazz!! Sandels to short to pant to skirts to tank top to sarongs. You're just there to have a good time!

by dr_in_asia

We went out a couple nights, once into Kuta which has lots of trendy little bars and restaurants but our favorite night out was in Jimboran region at a seafood beach restaurant. We went to 'Sharkey's' restaurant (and there are about 50 to choose from along the beach but this is the best one apparently). You have tables all on the beach, literally in the sand. Watch the sunset and tide roll in, breeze in the face, wandering minstrels serenading all the tables. Food was great. You choose your seafood from the front, its grilled and seasoned and then presented to you with vegs, salad, rice, potato and fruit dish to finish. All of that (with a couple bottles of wine) was about $6.5 US each. Casual to extremely dressy (we had a wedding party near us in full formal wear).

by Dom_W

The choice of nightlife is up to you. If you want loud dance music, drinking etc ( we all do sometimes)then Kuta is the place for you.In Sanur it was alot more laid back. Enjoy a fantastic meal ,and I really do mean fantastic, at one of the many restaurants that line the beachfront. Choose either to eat inside, or as we did, eat on the beach with your feet in the sand. Take your time, have a 3 course meal with drinks for about 4 GBP ahead, then stroll down to one of the beach front bars.Bliss.

The Kuta area in general: The Kuta area in general

by Siena

Kuta is just one big party spot. Try The Bounty for 'jam jars' (lethal). Every place has their 'speciality', which all tend to contain Arak (the Balinese equivalent to VERY alcoholic and VERY cheap liquor. Tastes like metholated spirits, but at around A$2 per litre, no one seems to care. Kuta is extremely casual. Due to the humidity, most travellers go out with their bathers on with skirts/shorts. Many guys are often seen at nightspots without tops, or occasionally they may 'dress up' and put on a fake surf t-shirt which cost them about 50cents.

Kuta Beach, Bali: Depends on...

by nickan

Kuta Beach, Bali: Depends on how old you are I guess...I'm 28 and felt old in Kuta beach when we went to clubs (like Sari club). I prefered nice dinners, talking to people. hm, getting older am I?A lot of people enjoy the movies- I didn't- lousy sound, bad quality and people talking. It's better in my own sofa at home. Sari Club has a huge, cheap drink called 'Jungle juice' that will knock you down. I liked 'Arrak Madu' tastes like a margeritha. none
