  • Dec-Feb : EAT DURIAN

by pangtidor Written Feb 4, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The month of December to February will be the best time for you to eat DURIAN.It is a green rounded fruit with though spiky skin, when you open it you will find some white cubicles inside, filled with durian meat.Though it has untolerable smell to the westerns, it is one of the favourite fruit for most of southeast asians. In Manado you may find some miny open chevy park all along Sam Ratulang Street with durians at the back.
After 8-9PM you can buy and eat durian at Manado Boulevard (Piere Tendean Street). You may bargain the good price and exchange the `bitter or sour` durian with the good ones when you eat your durian there.
If you want to eat durian there, don`t forget to bring water and tissue to clean your mouth and hands. To get rid from the unpleasant durian odor, you may pour the water in its cubicle, drink water directly from there and wash your hands too.
Ypu should try our traditional alcoholic beverage,SAGUER, with durian.Great one!
Just restrict yourself from eating many durians if you have cardiovascular diseases.
These months will be the season for other fruit too such as rambutan, mangostein, mango, etc so please do be careful to mix all of them in your tummy.

  • diving or snorkelling in bunaken

by mariaismawi Written Sep 19, 2006

The sea near Bunaken and Siladen islands are probably one of the best places to go diving or snorkelling in the world... Even if you don't do both, you can still go on the glass-bottom boats. It's definitely a must do activity in Manado

  • Boulevard sunset

When you are in Manado, you have to spend time seeing sunset at Manado Boulevard.I was born and grew up in Manado. This Boulevard was really beautiful and clean on its first years.I used to spend time there after school,we have afternoon class at school, and seeing the sun setting itself down to the earth at Boulevard is one of my sweetest memory of my hometown. The last time I went to Boulevard,it was awful. It is dirty, crowded and full of colorful tents.I was looking for the best place to see my lovely sunset.I got the best place there. You just go to the back of Bahu mall, turn to the left and you can sit yourself at the end of that left turn. The place is still clean, you can see local children laughing and swimming around, and the most imporrtant thing, you can enjoy the sunset view

    Much ado about diving

    by Restless-in-kl Updated May 7, 2006

This is divers' paradise and for dive addicts like me, when you have travelled so far to get here, all you do is dive.

There are 2 types of diving here :
    - wall dive in Bunaken
    - cold muck dive in Lembeh (be prepared, water is 23 degrees Celsius). Arrangements must be made ahead if planning to dive in Lembeh

Manado Tua has interesting, curvy walls with nooks and crannies to explore whilst Popoh is a slow and easy muck dive in warmer waters.

Along the way to Bunaken, there's usually groups of dolphins and pilot whales providing entertainment :-)

Eco Divers based in Tasik Ria offers great service, big comfortable boats and guides with really sharp eyes to help spot those cool critters.

Tangkoko is an accesible reserve about 30 km from Bitung. You mustn't have problems to see Tarsiers, black macaques and red-knobbed hornbills.

The best times to see the wildlife are at dawn (macaques and hornbills) or dusk (tarsiers).

The park fee plus a English spoken guide cost about 3€/person.

    Numerous Cute Green-eye Porcupine Fishes.

by ngsway Written Apr 16, 2004

These babies are really cute and shy.... They swim slowly and will always look away from your camera. The trick to capture their photo is to corner them! This particular one is cornered into a sponge..... heh!

    Aren't my eye brilliant?

    Sunsets

The Sunset Café is not only a nice place to eat (only restaurant in Manado where you can eat good pizza on nice sea-view terrace), but you can also witness the most beautiful sunsets there.
Even better sunsets can be seen from the poolside at the roof of The Ritzy hotel.

    The Ban Hin Kiong Temple

    by Linda1979 Updated Aug 18, 2003

In Manado are two Chinese temples. The oldest and biggest is the Ban Hin Kiong Temple.
This 19th century temple, the oldest in east Indonesia, is the worship place of Chinese Buddhist believers. The temple is located on Jl. Panjaitan in the center of the city.
Don't forget to take off your shoe's when entering the temple. Inside there is a lot to see and visitors are always welcome. There's no entrancy fee, but donations are, of course, always welcome.
When inside, you can climb the temple's roof, there you'll have a nice view. On top op the temple you can also find old Dutch canons.
During Toa Peh Kong each February, a traditional Chinese parade dating from the 14th century is held.

The second temple of Manado is much smaller and not interesting enough to visit. Unless of course, you have already seen everything else there is to see in Manado.
