A Land Trip from ACEH to PADANG

by meiyergani Written Oct 14, 2009

Favorite thing: Sumatra is a great place to explore, I have had a land trip by public transportation from Northern parts of Sumatra going southward. From Sabang on Weh island, Banda Aceh, Takengon, Bireun, Lhok Seumawe, Langsa, Medan, Lake TOBA, Sibolga, Mandailing Natal, Panyabungan, crossing Equator line and its monument at Bonjol village, Bukit Tinggi and Padang..... an earthQuake that rock Padang in September 30, 2009 is now under recovery, my friend over there told me that one could still enjoy the Panorama of West Sumatra right now, Bukit Tinggi is not so much influenced by the Quake, and you can reach Padang from Bukit Tinggi by another route of Lembah Anai (the road at this place was damage but under reconstruction), take a route via Solok by the side of beauty Danau (Lake) Singkarak......have a nice trips, cheers from Bogor Indonesia

Fondest memory: The beauty of Weh island - Banda Aceh, the capital of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province - Danau (Lake) Laut Tawar at Takengon - Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra Province- Danau Toba - Sinolga - Panyabungan - Equatorline Monument at Bonjol - Bukit Tinggi - Padang, the capital of West Sumatra Province.

    A Nice Road to Parapat

by meiyergani Written Sep 23, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: The Road From Medan To Parapat is better than a few years before, so the trip by land is not a boring one. On the other hand, we can see a greenery of Rubber and Palm Oil plantation along the street, in the far away we also see a bluish Bukit Barisan mountain range in a good weather

Fondest memory: The trip from Medan to Parapat take approximately 4 hours through a few stop over small city, Deli Serdang, Serdang Bedagai, Pematang Siantar and a few moment before entering Parapat we can see beautiful Panorama of Lake Toba

    Batak Textile design

by SLLiew Written Feb 7, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: As many ethnic groups in Indonesian, the hand woven textile and unique design is important to the Batak people.

When you visit some of the tourist sites, you will be followed by local women peddling their souvenir waves and traditional shawls of woven textiles. The latter are worth a second look.

Could be a colorful additon to your wall, your tv or desk top. As with any new unknown material, do prewash separately to ensure you do not get unnecessary staining. Get a good quality one if you are going to buy one.

    Traditional musical instrument

by SLLiew Written Feb 7, 2007

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: When in Lake Toba, I was impressed by the musical instruments of the Batak people.

The Batak has a stringed "guitar" with traditional carved figurines.

Decided that I have to have one and bought one back.

    Toba culture

by SLLiew Written Nov 7, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Besides the typical horn-like roofs of Batak palaces, in Tomok and other parts of Samosir Island, you can see royal tombs and megalithic stone table and chairs.

Apparently there is also a stone table for head execution.

After seeing many wooden buildings, it was a surprise to these fairly large size stone structures.

Stay on mainland or island in Lake Toba

by SLLiew Updated Nov 6, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: For our tour, we stayed on the "mainland" at Prapat on the first night and then on the "island" of Samosir the second day. The boat ferry leaves from Prapat to Samosir.

Would say it is fun at either side but if given one choice only, the Samosir side has more things to do and places to see. As many tours will spend more time at Samosir, there are more souvenir shops there too. But if you prefer a quieter place, then Prapat is the place.

Swimming in the water in Lake Toba on either side is interesting but you will not want to do it a second time. The water is too hard.
