Soft Sponge Cake called Bika Ambon is only available in Medan

What to buy: ZULAIKHA Bika Ambon is pleasantly chewy and has the sort of eggy-custardy-coconut flavor that's very popular in Indonesian desserts. The other interesting thing about it is the warning on the box, which informs us (in Indonesian) that after 3 or 4 days Bika Ambon will "experience a process of hardening."

What to pay: Around 20,000 IDR per cake packed in tranport worthy box

Medan Mall & Bazaar: First shopping mall we went

The Medan Mall is a popular crowded shopping mall with the locals. You need to bargain hard even in the store. There is an adjoining bazaar for bargain clothes.

Jeans and silk batik are popular buys for tourists.

Beware of the perfume and cream lotions sales girls. Once they grabbed your hands, they will not let go and immediately apply their products on your hands despite your protests.

    Modelling contest ongoing...

Another large shopping mall. You need to pay an entrance fee if the taxi drop you at the door step, otherwise, alight outside and walk up to the shopping mall.

There are many eating outlets as well as a food court on the top floor and Carrefoure.

Also cars were displayed as well as model contest for all ages held there when we were visiting.

Just another shopping mall but it was raining outside and so we spent more time floor by floor.

This is an upscale mall compared with Medan Mall. Most of the shoppers are well-to-do Indonesian Chinese.

There is a SOGO supermarket. Plenty of ATM (automatic teller machines) are the basement with a security guard sitting and watching.

There are several brand name shops. So it is a nice place to walkabout and window shop.

Oppositie of Sun Plaza is the famous Indian temple Shri Mariamman. So you might visit the temple first before you start your shopping.......

Asli: Cordial Drinks to Take home

    by Audrey118 Written May 2, 2003
    Cordial Drinks

I love their juices at the restaurant, so it was natural that I took some cordial home for my family to try.

The best is Markissa and also soursop. The markisa is actually passion fruit flavour, and what we did was mixed the cordial markissa with plain soda water - and top up with ice cubes - it was so good!!!! yummy

    coconut candy

I bought these lollies for home. It taste so much better than the ones we can get in Kuala Lumpur.

There were two types I was interested - coconut candy and durian flavoured coconut candy. The latter was so so good - although the lolly is quite a mouthful and beware if you have weak tooth - or even lots of fillings in your teeth!!!

We had been to A Cai to try some of the lapis cakes - but our local friend had ordered the cakes for us to take home to Malaysia.

We bought two types- the traditional lapis legit whcih has spices in it, cost 110,000 rupiah each, and we bought another type caleld lapis prune which has slivers of prunes in this layered butter cake cost 130.000 rupiah each.

It tastes much better than A Cai.

must be ordered advance, and they packed it very well for taking on board the plane

Lots of SIngaporeans and also Malaysians come here on the last minute to buy cakes to take home to their family. We pulled over on the first day to sample some...it was not bad but I was not crazy about it.

They have 2 types, one is Bika Ambon, and another is Lapis Legit. The first is sticky and lots of holes on it - looks like a beehive and the latter has about 20 layers, baked layered by layered. a very buttery cake with some spices like cinnamon in it. these are traditional Indonesian cakes.

Mall: Good Prices For Good Products

by aukjejetty Updated Apr 13, 2003

What to buy: My friend was looking for a pair of Teva's and since Indonesia appeared to be cheaper than anywhere else in Asia, he decided to look for a pair in Medan. He found a pair in a fancy mall (almost no people in the mall).

What to pay: The Teva's costed about $20 less than what I had paid for them a month earlier (in the US). So if you need some sneaker, sandal or anything else, try the malls in Medan!
