Spotting orangutan in the jungle Bukit Lawang II

by Daihappydai Written Jul 4, 2011

A good guide will hear orangutan approaching. We were lucky enough to be in a small clearing when our guide said to stand still and remain quiet. We could hear movement in the tree tops. It turned out to be a large female orangutan with a younger orangutan following. The female was quite curious and came close enough for us to photo but the juvenile stayed amidst the foliage at the top of the trees.

Spotting orangutan in the jungle of Bukit Lawang

While the Orangutan Feeding Centre is a great place to view semi-wild orangutan, a two-day jungle trek is an even better experience. Guides are plentiful so don't go with the first one who approaches. A good rule is to find out who your accommodation recommends - they are unlikely to support poor guides because they will then get a bad name themself. I got my recommedations from the fantastic people at the Jungle Inn.
Two day treks cost around $US 50 per person and include a guide, overnight stay in the jungle, food - some of the guides produce sensational meals from seemingly basic ingredients - camping equipment, park permits and rafting back to town.
The guide I had had incredible knowledge of the jungle flora and fauna. When I managed to get a spike from a tree all the way through the palm of my hand, the guide calming chewed up some leaves, made a paste, coated the wound and then wrapped the wound in a large leaf. Within twenty minutes the bleeding had stopped and the pain had gone. The plant was both a coagulant and a pain killer.
My guide pointed out a great deal of bird life, and spotted huge hives of bees which we duly walked around - even he was scared.
Our beautiful camping area on the banks of the fast moving Sungai Bohorok meant we weren't bothered by mosquitoes and were treated to an incredible meal.
The next morning we were joined by a group of friendly monkeys who helped clean up the breakfast leftovers and any extra bananas. After a relaxing morning, it was a fantastic tube ride down the river back to town.
