From Medan: if you can't get a flight to Nias & don't have enough time to wait in medan, it's better to get a shared taxi ('travel' in local language). It's also nice to cut the trip in the middle in Toba Lake/Samosir Island. Medan-Danau Toba (Parapat) takes 4 hours, Parapat-Sibolga takes 5 hours. The price is about $9-11 in 2006. The travel goes...

unfortunately, there is a taboo for women. they should not touch the fishing boat, because the fisherman will get bad luck if it happened. why? i don't know. and if you don't want to attract unnecessary attention, it better not to wear a bikini.

Motorcyclists, trucks and hustlers, they will all be waiting for you at the pier in Telek Dalam, ready to charge you ridiculous prices for the few kms to Lagundri Beach and prices will increase if you have a surf board. Just walk directly out of the port and sooner or later asomeone will take you on a motorbike at a fairprice.
