Before going to this place, go around Parapat town first and see what they offer. Ask the prices of souvenir items and remember the prices - don't buy yet.
When you visit Samosir Island you can find all those handicrafts and more souvenir items going up and around the tomb of King Sidabutar up on the hill. If something took your fancy bargain and haggle remembering the prices at Parapat town. They usually jack up the prices for tourist.
Upon landing at Tomok, we were welcomed by a guide and asked if we need a guide to go around. They said to wait for the English speaking guide or is the Indonesian guide okay with us. Rather than wait & since we understand the language, we joined the group that was going right away.
Unique Suggestions: Ask and agree beforehand how much will the guide cost you. Before I pay I ask our speed boat driver how much should I give, he does not know but said to give a tip of IDR 10,000 which the guide said should be IDR 25,000. We should have waited for the English speaking guide since the fee is per family. That was in 2005, it may be more expensive now.
Fun Alternatives: Or go without a guide and do your own exploring except if you want to know the history of the place.
We did not know that there is an entrance fee to visit Samosir Island, it was cheap though as we are charged IDR 3000 (ca. 2005) when we landed at Tomok.
Unique Suggestions: Inquire before going across, or is it just a fee to use the restaurant pier at Tomok where we landed in Samosir?
