Central Java: Dieng Plateau

by kokoryko

Dieng Plateau; rain, fog, rain fog again. . . . fog, fog, fog. . . . . I spent one day on the area, could see very little; I write a tip here despite the wet experience (rain is part of life, after all. . . ) because it is really a place worth to visit for somebody who likes the not too much beaten places and some special ambience in the deep Javanese countryside.Dieng Plateau is well known for its small groups of Hindu-Javanese temples known as the oldest on java and is known also for its thermal springs.Dieng Plateau is located South west of Semarang and accessible either from Semarang or from Solo (Surakarta); the average elevation is 1500-1700m, which explains the rain and cold weather. So not a lot to tell, few pictures except this one (main picture) of a temple built in a particular style with its small decorative arches; on this picture (picture 2) we see the small arches...

Central Java: Imogiri, the sultans graves.

by kokoryko

This is not a place beaten by tourists feet; the sultans graves are located in a place called Imogiri, 40 km south of Yogyakarta. It is a small village and the graves are located in an old palace situated on a hill dominating the village; to get there two things are compulsory:1) you have to climb up more than 300 stairs in the equatorial heat. . . 2) you must wear traditional Javanese clothes. You cannot go there dressed in western fashion (and certainly not in arrogant disgusting tourist fashion: shorts in bright colours, more skin than cloth, etc. . . ).Then you arrive in a heaven of peace, a very quiet and calm place, where several pavilions are the last house of renowned sultans of Yogyakarta; there is a lot to learn about top of the art handicrafts, mainly batik and silver, about traditional architecture, history of central Java. The bad (not that bad after all. . . ) news is that...
