Avoiding the eruption

by balisunshine

Indonesia is rich in unique wild life, natural resources, and has the largest abundance of marine life in the world.Another unique characteristic of Indonesia is Lake Toba.It is remarkable to consider that there are 129 volcanoes on the same 3,000 kilometer fault linethat produces earthquakes and tsunamis. In 1883, there was an explosion so loud that it was heard as far as Bangkok and Perth.Scientist have been investigatingthe Toba volcano in North Sumatrawhich is believed to have erupted 73,000 years ago and left a crater80 kilometers wide which,is now Lake Toba. This eruption produced in over 1-2 weeks 440 megatonsof sulfate and silica ash deposits,1.5 meters thick as far ashundreds of miles away. The debris blocked the sun raysand is believed to have sent the global temperature plunging ,helping to trigger the ice age.Lake Toba may be one of the deepest lakes in the world.A powerful place...

Borobudur is a sight not to be missed... yes, get there early - 6am... pay for a guide... best Us$2-3 you'll invest.... walk it all, go to the museum, buy crafts from the locals... very impressive, mystic, powerful...Flying to Jogjakarta in Garuda for less than US$90 is perfect... staying at Duta Guest House, also perfect and affordable....

Detour to Pangandaran pls

by Fudge

I would recommend all travellers to check out this sleepy fishing village cos not many travellers go there. At least not 6 years ago when I was there. It's off the main tourist route so all the more worth checking. Best thing to do is wake up before sunrise and watch the fishermen and women bring in their catch! So gorgeous against the morning dawn light and the beautiful colours of the sea - pink and crimson and teased with the night blue light slowly fading away. Do pack a good camera for indonesia. You'll be truly grateful!

Climb the Mountains and Cool Off!

by lmkluque

Drive out of the city and see the beautiful country of Indonesia. Here is a terrace of tea plants, a most effecient use of the mountian side. Not far from Jakarta near Bogor there are plenty of interesting things to see or do and one of the most enjoyable journeys of my trip was getting to Puncak Pass Restaurant. This place was actually a resort and I wouldn't mind staying here for a time, but we only stopped for lunch. The view from the huge glass walls, allowed us a panoramic version of the lush tea terraces. Like something straight out of National Geographic! Awesome and beautiful!Mine is not such a clear picture because of the moisture in the air. Climbing up the mountians is also a wonderful way to escape the heat of the lower altitudes.

It's cooler in the hills here.

by kiwi

Indonesia has a different way of thinking in the summer. I am used to heading for the beach and coastal areas during the summer. However in Indonesia, it is so hot in the summer they like to head for the coolness of the bushclad hills. Here you find grandiose and secluded hideaways where the privileged go for relief from the intense heat. The houses are impossible to see amongst the bush and tree cover.

The whole beach for yourself

by Glorija

If you really do not like crowded places and if you wanna have the beach for yourself than you must visit Pangandaran. Small fishing village on the south of Java is a place you wont forget. Friendly locals and relaxing atmosphere is really something that comes under your skin and it is a matter of question how long you will stay in Panganaran.

Loksado and Negara-villagelife, trekking and wiew

by global_explorer

Loksado 2 hours by bemo from Kandangan, Kalimantan is a quiet village situated in the Muratusmountains. The village itself are plesant but have no sights. I will however recomend spending an evening in the warungs if there is locals there. I spendt an evening watching tv in one of them together with some locals. Before us it was a range of dishes and kueh-pastries. We ate what we wanted, when we wanted it and payed when we left. It was the unformal way and i had almost no feeling of being in a public place. It was more like visitings somebodys home. The owner acted just like a grandmother. Less than 30 minuttes of trekking from Loksado you arrive at Malaris, a totaly different world. The population of this village occupies a Balai, or longhouse. Here almost all inhabitants live in the same building. The people here are friendly enough, but most are somewhat shy. In Malaris it is around...

Negara-Fish, craft and friendliness

by global_explorer

Negara in Kalimantan close to Kandangan city is a big village in the middle of a endless wetlandarea, you even see the horizon curves. Sitting in a boat is perfect for sunsetwiew. There is no formal accomodation, but an eager crowd soon accomodated me at the family living in the public house, as it was called. Then i got a guide, an englishstudent named Gumberi. I recomend him. In a way Negara is a cleaner and quieter version of Banjarmasin, with stilthouses surrounded by intense green marshland. In the rainseason it is more like a big lake. Gumberi gave me good insight in the local life. He showed me the blacksmiths area, then the potteryworkshops, and the manually driven sawmills. On the oposit riverbank there is a couple of small shipyards where wooden riverboats are under construction. Close by there is the propellerfactory where a wide wariety of propellers can be casted in short...

Afternoon tea with the President?

by worldkiwi

In 1989, I visited the Presedential Palce in Jakarta with my high school class. We had afternoon tea with President Suharto! The occasion will be one I always remember. I guess not many 17 year old westerners could say they had afternoon tea with the President of Indonesia!
