Walk across Kalimantan

by travelbugchris

If you really want to get off the beaten path, then this is it! From Kalimantan Barat to Kalimantan Timur.Head up the Kapuas River from the coastal city of Pontianak until you reach Putusibau. From there, you can head further up into the centre on small boats until you reach the last village on the west - Long Pahangai. Try to negotiate for local guides here, or talk with the helpful local missionary and get some instructions (although he has only ever been half way). Also, stock up on supplies - dried noodles, liquid parafin for starting fires. (If you intend to cook on an open fire, you will definitely need some kind of fueld to start it off, as the wood is all damp in the jungle). From here, it's about ten days of hard slog through uninhabited jungle upriver, up into the mountains and over, constantly heading east, down the Huvong River and, finally into the mighty Mahakam River. At...

Go far away

by Claus_Qvist

Very few tourists in Indonesia get away from Sumatra, Java and Bali. Perhaps Lombok and the Gillis, but no further - and that's a shame. Try the remote islands instead; lots to see, dirt cheap and much less tourists than in Kuta Beach.Personally, my favourites are Sulawesi and Flores - especially the highlands of Tanatoraja (Sulawesi) and Bajawa (Flores), both of which are Christian (Protestant / Catholic). Consequently, as Christianity seems to be less dominant than Islam (at least in Indonesia), these regions have preserved much of the old pagan beliefs. If you like watching "the spirits of the ancestors", these are the places to go.

Flores Islands

by Chilie

Take a fisher boat from Labuan Bajo, they will bring you on a day tour to some very little islands. Snorkelling is bsolutely fantastic. Nobody lives there, you will be completely alone! It takes about 1 hour each way.

Ecotourism and Wildlife.

by EricLe_Rouge

There are some who point to 'ecotourism' as a source of salvation for the richest wildlife areas, based on the model of East African safari parks. Unfortunately the model is inappropriate for a number of reasons, not least the total discrepancy in the visibility and accessibility of the animal life; it is simply not possible to drive up to a Sumatran rhino and take its photograph. The main exceptions to this are probably Komodo where visitors come to see and photograph the Komodo Dragons, and sites in Sumatra and Kalimantan such as the Bohorok Orang-Utan Rehabilitation centre in the Gunung Leuser National Park where orang-utans can be encountered at close quarters. There are a number of specialist ecotourism companies exploiting these few niches but the number of tourists involved is small and probably insignificant in the context of the entire tourism sector. In some respects this is...

Gunung Papandayan

by Bonobo2005

This was the 1st active volcano I ever saw so I'll never forget this one. After at least 10 more volcanos I have to say the Papandayan was also one of the most amazing to visit (I say -was- because there has been major eruptions recently and don't know how it looks like now).It was not that active to be too dangerous when descending in the crater, but active enough to be impressive! Be careful though, the fumes are poisonous and can easily burn your lungs. From the carpark it's a 30 minutes walk along unearthy lavastone formations to the crater. Tourists have to hire a local guide who should know where safe to go.Daytrips organised by guesthouses in Bandung usually include a visit here. Also accessable from Garut or Cipanas (on the way from Bandung to Pangaruran).

Friends

by iwent

They sit on a wall, near a lamp, biding their time. Suddenly they jump on their prey and devour it.They are my friends, these house lizards, they eat mosquitoes. Occasionally you can hear their call: 'chichak, chichac'.Never ask hotel staff to remove them, there are too many of them, they move like lightening. Besides if you do you'll cut a foolish figure.Geckos on the other hand are much bigger and it might be better to remove them as they have they objectionable habit of waking you up in the middle of the night by a loud:'gecko, gecko'. Hence their name

Try out the many types of interesting fruits indigenous only to South Asia: DURIAN - the 'king of all fruits' so called in Indonesia is one of my many favorites. Others like HARUMANIS - a type of mango only grown in Indonesia, BUAH DUKU & LANGSAT. YUMMY!!!

All the tropical fruits

by Sharrie

All the tropical fruits, including DURIAN can be bought from roadside stand as pictured. RAMBUTAN, another juicy & tasty fruit is a favorite of mine! Other fruits like SALAK PONDOK, SALAK BALI, DUKU & LANGSAT are typical fruits of Indonesia & I highly recommend them to anyone who like something different & unique. The fun thing to do is to eat on the roadside! Try it out & do tell me if you like them...
