by lobstop

Uluwatu is a very unique surfspot, where I even met Hawaiian surfers. I asked them why they came to Bali and they said, that this are the best waves of the world. The place is only for professionals because it is a rip and cliff spot. Nevertheless, have a Bin Tan (the local beer), get a massage and watch the surfers about 150 feet below riding the waves. We called that 'living'! Hang loose!

Visit the market of Sanur at the end of your trip in Bali. The market is cheap and they have so many beautiful things here. You can buy T-shirts, batik dresses, shorts and blouses here. You too can get slippers, jewelry, cards, picturebooks and beautiful silk scarfs. The market is worth a visit.

On your way to the north of Indonesia ask your driver to stop along the road. Many old temples -like the 13th century temple on the picture- are standing on the side of the road. Find out more about this temple in my TRAVELLOGUE!

You can also go on the long or the fast slides (there are four slides here), play voleybal in the pool or just go for a swim. The extra specialties of this pool are massages and the drinks and sandwhichservice!

by sandravdp

Relaxing on a band and floating along was my favourite thing to do at the Waterbompark in Kuta. A kind of streaming river takes you a long waterfalls, flowers and all sorts of trees and plants. Butterflies and birds fly along. The 'river' splits in two at one point so you aren't floating the same way everytime.

Go and stroke a turtle at turtle island. You will notice that a turtle feels very funny to touch. Watch out it might bite you! The turtles are put back in the water after picking them up...they are not picked up often, the locals don't like that and they are right. Turtles don't live to be picked up all the time.

Visit Amlapura (Puri Agung Karangasem) and perhaps meet the grandson of the last king. Our guide is on the right. On the left is the grandson of the last Balinese Rajah. The Kingdom of Karabgasem broke away from the Gelgel kingdom in the late 17th century and a century later had become the most powerful kingdom in Bali

Borobudur

by seagoingJLW

Visit the largest and oldest Buddhist monument in the world at Borobudur, discovered by Stanford Raffles in 1814. It is a mass of carved stone shaped into a mythological model of the universe. The gateway to Borobudur is through SemarangThe 1100 year old temple derives its name from the one mentioned in the inscription, HUMISAMHARABHUDHARA : The Monastery of Accumulation of Virtue on the Ten Stages of Bodhisativa. The monument took perhaps 10,000 men and 100 years to build.Borobudur was abandoned soon after its completion. It was buried under a thousand years of volcanic eruptions and tropical growth until discovery by Sir Stamford Raffles, the British Governor during the British occupation of Indonesia in 1814.Borobudur, as a classical stupa, is both a meru (mountain inhabited by the gods) and a replica of the three divisions of the Mahayana Buddhist universe: kamadhatu (the lower...

Java

Java is a well known tourist destination, but, I can assure you, after 1998 it became an off the beaten path, as many many western countries warn people about it.Anyway, in Java, not far from Yogyakarta there is a mountain village: Gedusongo, definitly woth a visit for its small temples and its many pelegrims, the atmospheare you breathe is really unique.

Komodo Islands

by Mark_R2

these islands are sort of like an Asian Galapagos islands- exotic landscape, unusual animals including the worlds largest lizards, Komodo dragons. When I was there a decade ago me and some Dutch people hired a local fisherman to take us out there. Everyday the Park ranger would slaughter a goat and the Komodo dragons would have a feeding frenzy for all the tourists to watch. When I was there it was still well off the beaten path. since it was almost a decade ago, I don't really have any useful travel advise, but it was a really cool experience if you are into the wildlife/safari experience. One thing I can say is if you are into photography, you don't need one of those cumbersome 600mm lens there to get good photos. Believe it or not I used a standard 50mm f/1.8 lens for this shot.
