A large backpack and a smaller carry on was all i took. Pack shorts, sun frocks, comfie shoes. I always took 3 days worth of change, and I bought the rest there. I always took an empty suitcase, but it never stayed that way long! I took a small first aid kit. Chemist shoppes are hard to find, and when ye do, they are exspensive. Sunblock, sunblock, sunblock!
Any Sturdy shoes / boots if you're planning to do a lot of walking, especially up the volcanoes.Loose lightweight clothing and plenty of sunscreen - being equatorial, the sun is very hot and very unforgiving. Just about everything you might need is easily available in most areas of the country, and often at a cheaper price than you would have paid back home. Film and batteries are cheap and available. As water features highly in Balinese garden designs, a polarising filter will help capture the best effects. Surfing and diving are popular sports in Bali whether you're an expert or a novice. Organised tour operators will take you to the best spots.
Its best to take a backpack when travelling on the move and for a long time. Suit cases are not practical A pair of sandals or flipflops are essential. Two pairs of shorts for swimming, light t-shirts and a light jumper, and a mac as well in the rainy season Immodium for dhiarea, and mosquito spray I just used disposable cameras in that way you don't have to worry about your expensive camera breaking if your in the water watch out for stone fish if you step on one they will give you an agonising sting and sometimes death. Its handy to have a small torch because of all the trails in the jungle
Pack very, very little as you can buy everything clothes wise you want in Bali at very little cost. Take a big bag to bring all the prezzies back. Take your camera but be aware af the effect the humidity may have on it. Keep wiping that lens!!!

We had backpacks. I was there when they had rain season. Bring sandals that stands water. The roads turn into floods. If going to a tempel- cover your shoulders and knees. mosquito net I brought three small cameras. Under water, digital and 'usual'. Don't forget sun block!!! The first weeks I used spf 50 in my face.
Trekking style backpack. light weight cotton long pants, several pairs of shorts, several t-shirts, and two button up short sleeve shirts. The rest is up to you. bring whatever medicines you may need. Canon Eos 10s with 200 and 400 speed film. hiking boots. Bring a good head on your shoulders!
Hot hot hot bloody hot! Dress accordingly. Ladies, there are loads of wonderful little batik and printed cotton dresses and shifts for sale in the shops, so you really could show up with just the clothes on your back, and maybe some undies, and buy the rest here! I actually had to buy another bag to fit my purchases, so I do wish someone had given ME this advice before I left! A big warning, though: the fabrics bleed unbelievably, so hand-wash them quite alone in cold water. Borobudur; need I say more? You can get film all over the place, but I had a bit of trouble getting video 8mm film for non-PAL (American). I finally found it in Yogyakarta, in the Maliboro (or something like that) market near the train station. It's easier to bring an extra if you think you may use it.
Loose fitting breathable clothes and a good sun hat. Carry or wear a sarong for temple sight-seeing in Bali. Clothing is cheap and plentiful in Bali so you may want to pack really light and plan on buying some once there. I came home with a dozen shirts and a dozen sarongs! Long sleeves/pants and hiking boots recommended for in the jungle in Kalimantan. For Kalimantan: goto a travel health advisory to get the right shots and definately malaria pills!! Also bring the bug spray, sun block, etc... Bring your surfboard to Bali! :-) Bring everything you will need if going to Kalimantan! There aren't many stores if any that you will see. Bottled water is a must, and you might want to bring some snacks, too.
Bali is part of Indonesia and has some funny rules regarding bringing religious texts, radios and mobile phones with you. It would be best to check up beforehand at a travel advisory site what you should leave behind unless you want it confiscated. Bring a hat! Bali can be very humid so it would be best to bring some anti-fungal powder as well as the usual medical kit.Bring some insect repellent. Even in Kuta there are mosquitoes everywhere so you should bring enough to last as long as it takes to buy a can of repellent from a local supermarket. Insect repellent is very cheap in the markets and massive cans sell for a dollar or so.
