We came across this sugar factory in the jungle on our way to the waterfall above Sibanggor Julu in the Mandailing Batak region. Palm sugar is heated in a metal bowl above a fire, the final product being huge lumps of sugar weighing one or two kilograms each.

We made a lightning visit to these hot water baths in the southernmost part of the Batak country near Sibanggor Julu. After a bath, the stench of sulphur is said to cling to you for the next three or four days no matter how you scrub, and the water is probably not very clean either, but a bath is nonetheless said to be beneficial to your health.
