A view of Sorong from above
    1 more image

Favorite thing: Traveling by flight now is not so expensive than years ago. When I have a trip by flight, at the check in counter, I ask to have a seat beside the window. Sorong is a good view from the air, I take some pictures of Sorong seen from Above

Fondest memory: Nothing to say that, what i've been seeing from above is a very good memory, everything about Sorong are look like a nice small town with its beach line, clusters of housing, a green mountain range, the boat and ship at the blue ocean

    Once Home Sweet Home

by RoyJava Updated Jul 31, 2005

    my-former-house-sorong

Favorite thing: Sorong always had a well-known vartiety of fauna & flora, includes the Hibiscus and orchid. For now an important Pertamina Oil city with over 200.000 people and a lot of districts most of the woods has disappeared. Very different from my childhood ...

Fondest memory: My childhood was a very happy one, although the time is the one of colonial people. See my Home-Sweet-Home house next to the hospital at Sorong where I've been raised. Hardly recognized when I returned for the very first time. I remember the green python snakes up in the tree, when we played "Tarzan & Jayne" ... and the crocodiles in the rivers around, the mosquitos and the kaki empat, a kind of bizar croc. All have been gone, withdrawn into the jungle, far away from the busy life op people now-a-days ...

    FIREFLIES - Lightning Bugs

by RoyJava Updated Jun 28, 2005

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    cover-firefies-book

Favorite thing: As kids we loved to watch the "Fireflies", of the "lightning bugs". Strange enough these creatures got very seldom found.

Scientists proved the firefly is a beetle. They produce light which is a chemical reaction. When some components are added, the chemical reaction does produce "light"...

Fondest memory: The only thing I remember was at evenings we climbed the Stone Hill of Sorong, descented and got to the area of the "Fireflies", better known as "Konang-Konang". This area was close to the "Berembang Tree" (or known by its scientific name "Sonneratia Caselaris", a type of mangrove tree, and to us the Firefly-tree). So there must be a swamp or some damp around for breeding.

Being very fond of these "fireflies" I found the book "Fireflies" by Julie Brinckloe (1986 - ISBN: 0689710550) to remember my experience and, a great gift to my friend's children. In Sorong the creatures have gone, and I have never seen these again ...

    The Day We Left

    boat-trip-to-holland

Favorite thing: Actually not the most important activity as well the most sad one ... leaving the neighbourhood where you have been raised, went to school, made friends, loved your closest, enjoyed nature and, grew older.

Fondest memory: Found this picture, it is the day we left Sorong to Holland. By MS boat "Bali" we sailed away from Sorong and, I do remember my mom's very serious and dramatic words ...
which I understood when I returned to Indonesia for the first time ...
"Look around very good for the very last time and remember this green ... the green jungle we have to leave ... For this green you'll never gonna see again ..."

    Dancing-club The Soos, Sorong

    the-soos-sorong-irianjaya

Favorite thing: Visiting Sorong you will be confronted with the colonial times of New Guinea and Holland. In those days people went to The Soos, up on The Hill (Kuda Laut-hill). The hottest place for all kind of entertainment. And ofcourse the big parties were celebrated here; beautiful dressed ladies accompanied by their handsome fellows.

Fondest memory: A bit a shame this place got totally neglected. It is a place for now where the soldiers come together to have some amusements ... goodbye old times, welcome the new plays! Did I hear the song "Old soldiers never die ..."?

    The Dynamite Islet

by RoyJava Written Jan 31, 2005

    islet-dynamite-sorong-irianjaya

Favorite thing: 'k ... Sorong has been changed, no doubt about that! Whenever someone is returning to childhood area all will be experienced in another way. Some are shocking, some are not, and even pleasing. Visiting Sorong go for a walk up to The Hill, close to the harbour. You cannot miss it ...

    Dynamiet Eiland - Islet Dynamite

Fondest memory: Have a great view at Sorong's harbour and, turn around ... you'll see the Dynamiet Eiland, or Dynamite Islet. It got the name while one believed this very small islet arose after the bombment of World War II. And enjoying the view... take in mind this photograph of a very long time ago ...

... and you'll guess what I do miss when away from Sorong!

    Upmost Fondest Memory

    my-mom-in-sorong

Favorite thing: This is my mother. When I think of her in Sorong the most wonderful moments cross my mind. Dwelling in the garden she could stay for hours after her fashion-work got finished. She worked at home, while my father used to work at Jefman, one hour boat-trip from Sorong ...

She loved the "Kembang Spatu"-flower, the cyclamen one, also her favourite colour. I found this photograph and got moved by the colour of cyclamen. Even her dress is decorated with that colour ...

Fondest memory: Whenever you visit Sorong try to enjoy all of the flowers and foliage around. It is worth to make a kind of list with the names of several flowers, like the Kenanga, Kembang Spatu, M'Lathi/Jasmine, Mawar/Rose, Orchid etc. It is a great matter to recognize these ... We do have a *Fruit-lover* who write about fruits, maybe there will be a *Flower-lover* in next future ... thanks to >>>

    Local Beauty Of Purity

by RoyJava Updated Oct 24, 2004

    papua-girl

Favorite thing: As make-up artist I love to watch people, like on a terrace, in the street, on a party. I donot look at traces of make-up, I just take a look at the human face. Belonging to an individual, male or female ... old or young, dark-skinned or pale.

Fondest memory: Caught by telelens this Papua girl felt she was looked at. So we approximated her, so easy because she was the daughter of one of the hotel-people. We got to learn to know this girl a bit during our time in Sorong. A very nice person and attractive. And a beauty of purity ...
thanks for let us wander into your small world Papua girl

    happy-times

Favorite thing: See the big water-tap? That was to wet the grass, flowers and hedges. And to clean things like the car, terrace, roof and, fun-time for all children. At first with buckets and, later a jet of water made all the kids happy, splashing around ...

Fondest memory: Happy memories of old times, even I hardly can remember these times. My parents told the kids-stories a thousand times and I just remember the water-fun ... I am the left one, next to my brother (& friend you hardly can see)

    Sorong - Jefman, Airport

by RoyJava Updated Sep 19, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    palmtree-sorong

Favorite thing: Jefman, Sorong Airport, is a small island about 32 km from the town, where my dad used to work. When holiday-time we got allowed to join him and enjoyed a wonderful day at the island.

Around the island there are beautiful white sandy beaches with spotlessly clear water. You even can watch sharks coming by. Waving palm-trees accompany you when taking a beach-walk and get impressed by its multitude. Palm-trees have always been the best models.

Voyaging for Sorong harbour by motorized longboat you could try to hire a longboat for yourself, and have a great fishing time. The ocean is famous for its fishes ...

Fondest memory: When we left to Holland in the '60's, my parents told us to watch the green all around, and the waving palms very intensively. We didn't understood anything of it ... until we arrived at Holland. It was me who missed these green colours the most ...

    Boulevard D'Ocean - Beach Road

by RoyJava Updated Sep 18, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    view-beach-road-sorong

Favorite thing: The main road of Sorong entirely runs along the shore. To me this road still remains the main-road, although the roads inland to industrial areas are larger, better constructed and smoother to ride. Especially with bad weather the "beach road" was dangerous area, because the waves could strike the road...

Fondest memory: The "beach-road" puts forward great memories of huge distances. Children only were allowed to walk until particular points, no further on. Here you see the "end" of the Beach Road, where it bends to harbour. We managed to sneak away and hidden behind the rocks and trees we looked for shells. Unhappy you, if you got caught ...
thanks Sorong for this memorable road
