Pasar Jibama

by EdVallance

Wamena's biggest market, just outside town. Get a bemo from the town centre, its about 2000 rupiah. Here you can get all sorts of food and cooking equipment to stock up for your trek. It's also the main place where minivan taxis leave from to villages in the Baliem Valley and Lani country (west of Wamena).

Sumpaima

A little village just further than Jiwika if you head West of Wamena. It has the best preserved mummy of a former warlord in the region. Pay the inhabitants about 10,000 and they'll bring it out and show it to you. They are also happy to put on dancing, mock fighting and pig kills for a price. To get here take a bemo about 45 minutes from Pasar Jibama in Wamena.

Wamena

by EdVallance

The biggest town in Papua's interior. It is more like a big village by English standards, with about 10,000 people. It is situated in the Baliem Valley in the Central Highlands. You can get here by the daily Triggana or Manunggal cargo flights from Sentani, but Manunggal is cheaper. When you first arrive in Wamena a load of guides will surround you as you get off the plane. Ignore them - there is an abundance of guides in Wamena and you can pick and choose. A good rate is 100,000 a day for someone who speaks English to carry your bag and guide you. If you speak Indonesian you can easily get it for 50,000. As you walk down the street from the airport to your hotel you may be caught off guard by the sight of a naked Dani tribesman wandering down the street!

Kiroma

by EdVallance

The last village in the Baliem Valley. From hear you head on to Gunung Elit if you want to cross into the Yalimo, and unless you're a very strong, fast walker / climber will have to spend a night in the wild. There are a couple of huts on the way that you can sleep it, one is known to the locals as Mulubaraik, and one as Wongol. If you want to bypass Gunung Elit you can head from here to Moning, Ninia and Angguruk but it takes longer. Elit is a very steep 7 hour uphill trek followed by a 5 hour near vertical ascent.

Kurima

45 minutes by bemo east of Wamena, this is as far as the road goes. It is also a starting point for a lot of treks, be it to Angguruk, Ninia, Korupun. There is a vast hanging bridge that crosses the river which you will experience at the beginning of your trek. Register your surat jalan on arrival. If you're traveling independently and speak Indonesian you can find a guide here who will show you the way, carry your bag and cook for you. Expect to pay 50,000 rupiah per day. Isaac Itlai is a good, honest, funny, strong man who I can recommend. The trek from here to Yogosem is about 8 to 10 hours and is relatively easy. The path is easy to follow and there are LOADS of villages so if you're really adventurous you could try doing it without a guide! The photo shows a village near Kurima on the way to Yogosem.

Lani country

by EdVallance

Lani country begins around Kimbim or Pyramid but you won't see any of the distinctive huge Lani kotekas until you get much further West, around Tiom. You can get a bemo from Wamena but I found it very easy to pick up lifts in trucks by just walking down the road.

Sentani

by EdVallance

The town next to Jayapura, where the airport is. It has a laid-back, friendly atmosphere. It is situated on beautiful Lake Sentani, which you will see as you fly in on the plane. There are plenty of islands on the lake that can be explored if you pay a local to take you out on your boat.

As we can see at the map of Indonesian Papua, The map was reflection o as a Bird, Sorong then located at the Bird's head of Papua island. Sorong is a not only a an industrial remote town in Papua, but also a harbor town and the transit for the one who plan to travel to a very remote beautiful island of Raja Ampat
