Lemper Ayam

by Sharrie

Lemper Ayam is steamed glutinous rice with chicken (ayam) filling. It's usually eaten as snack or in breakfast in Indonesia. This is one of my favorite as well :-) It can be bought at the market along with many other types of Kueh (cakes or pastry).

Medan Laksa

by Sharrie

Laksa is a kind of broad rice noodle cooked in hot & spicy soup accompanied by fish & garnished with peppermint leaves & some other local ingredients. It's usually eaten in the afternoon as either snack or main meal. This is a dish originating in Medan & a similar version can also be found in Penang, Malaysia. An authentic local dish & if you are anywhere in Medan, do give it a try. It tastes best when hot.

Nasi Padang

by Sharrie

Nasi is Bahasa Indonesia's word for rice. Padang is a region of Sumatra & it has one of the most wonderful cuisine where one can get a taste of it in Medan & Jakarta. Lots of individual side dishes consisting of chicken, fish, beef & seafood are brought to the table for you to choose & eat to your heart's content. It's also interesting to know that Indonesians eat with their fingers & is quite an experience for the beginners to do so, especially when mixed with the curry gravy. Some of my favorites are:Ayam Goreng (with Kunjet) - Fried chicken.Acar - Pickle.Bakso - Meatball soup.Emping - Dried Melinjo nuts which is fried & serves as snack before the meal. Chips, Indonesian style.Gurame Goreng - Fried Gurame, a fish commonly found in Indonesia.Ikan Bakar - Barbecued fish.Kari Otak - Cow's brain cooked in curry. Believe me, this one is a specialty. Awesome!Opor Ayam - Chicken cooked in...

Sate Padang

by Sharrie

Sate Padang (Padang is a region of Sumatra) is my most favorite street vendor food. I had this since I was a kid & remembered all those days where I looked forward to either the recess or the end of the school day where I'd rushed off to get my share of Sate Padang! It's one of the best known of Sumatra dishes & though Sate is typical of Indonesia dish, I only like Sate Padang. Sate is cooked on the spot as pictured. The common Sate is grilled with charcoal & then served with a spicy peanut sauce but Sate Padang has a different kind of sauce. I don't know what's in it & neither can I describe the taste. It's out of this world & my aunt used to comment my addiction & talked about "ganja" being one of the ingredients ;-) Different kind of meat can be ordered including the "Lidah" (cow's tongue); this is one of the best!

with shrimp painted on the canvas walls.: 'No name' restaurant in Bontang

by Pierre_Rouss

This place was great!!! I went there twice with friends. The restaurant is really a ondulated tin roof, held together with 8-10 post, the walls are canvas from the ground to chest height with painting of shrimps, crab and fish (to hint that it's a seafood restaurant). Inside, 6 picnic tables, the cook hides behind plywood walls in a 6 by 6 kitchen with 4 feet wok for griling the food.No ustensiles, you eat with your right hand the pre-cutted food with bowl of rice. kepiting (crab), ikan bakar (grilled fish), cumi goreng (prononced 'chew-me', guess why, for squid).More Info: Warning : this probably goes against just about every health advices you will get before you go : don`t eat seafood because of hepatitis, amibas, typhoid, etc...Sure taste great and remember my motto : in Rome, like the Roman.

The Indonesian side of the barrack cafeteria. For breakfast, lunch and dinner, I was faced with the dilemna of eating either on the occidental side (cooked by an indonesian cook anyway) and the indonesian side with loads of choices. For breakfast : telur goreng (fried eggs)For lunch : ayam goreng (sauted chicken with sauce), nasi putih (white rice)For dinner : kambing goreng (i am not sure if it was sheep or goat) and mi (noddles)With sambal lombok and sambal asli everywhere even for breakfast (hot sauces) and mangga (mango) and papaya with lime juice!!! Delicious.

by lupit

Jagung Bakar (barbecued corn) stall There are 4 different sauces that are smothered on the barbecued corn: sweet, chilli, chocolate, salty, and combination of some or all of the above. My favourite is 'coklat pedas' (chocolate and chilli). Sounds weird, but you gotta try it before you judge it. My English husband got hooked on his first try!

Melati Restaurant, MALANG: Melati Restaurant, MALANG

They serve local food as well as chinese, dutch and american. Overlooking pool & garden, very romantic. There's a grand piano that you're welcome to use. Live music in the weekend. Highly recommended! Soup Merah (tomato soup), lumpia (spring roll), Nasi goreng Pak Samin (fried rice)

by xaver

In the islands you often have a full board treatment as they are so small that you can find just some bungalows and a restaurant managed by the same people.I simply loved the food, fresh coconuts, seafood, rice and satai. seafood in general, they fish in the morning and cook for lunch.
