Favorite thing: One of my fondest memories of Bengkalis is taking a morning stroll around town to breathe the fresh air and watch the sun rise. The best time to start is around 6am and you will be surprised that many local people are already on the streets walking around and doing exercises. By strolling around, you can be experience the local life and see the local buildings such as houses, school etc. As for safety, Bengkalis is rather safe and the people are friendly, the main problem is the language barrier.

Favorite thing: There is a busy market area located near to the Bengkalis Ferry Terminal, especially the morning. Many locals come near to buy food, eat at the food stores etc. Because Bengkalis is mainly Islamic, those stores selling pork runned by the Chinese are usually located at one corner of the market area.

Favorite thing: Indonesia is the biggest Islamic country in the world, and this can be clearly seen in the culture of Bengkalis. Besides the huge and impressive Istiqpmah Mosque, there are several other mosques in the town area, which are smaller but quite impressive.

Favorite thing: When you are exploring the town area near to the Bengkalis Ferry Terminal, you will notice a row of wooden houses as shown in the photograph. These are in fact the oldest shophouses in Bengkalis.

Favorite thing: As Bengkalis is a laid back town, there are still many kampung houses (traditional wooden houses) which can be seen here. The locals lead a simple lifestyle in these houses.
